Role Description

The IT Business Analyst is a vital part of a growing team. This person works closely with the development team and business partners to define both technical and user requirements. These requirements must be documented in detail, ensuring that the developers and testers on a project can clearly understand the desired outcomes, and ensuring that the end result delivery is as expected. The IT Business Analyst role also entails project management responsibilities, seeing that each project is meeting expected timelines through its lifecycle, and coordinating with the appropriate teams to move the project forward.

As someone who understands system architecture and database structure, the IT Business Analyst will bridge the gap between business stakeholders and the dev team. The right person for our team speaks knowledgably about technical subjects in a way that makes sense for a wide variety of audiences, internally and externally. They will own the process and quality of business requirements (gathering, documenting, communicating, refining, etc.), as well as assist in technical implementations. They will also be a key party to making sure that project timelines and milestones are on track.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate user acceptance testing with business stakeholders, as well as communicate changes with other business users who may be impacted

  • Set project timelines, keep track of progress, statuses, and blockers for multiple concurrent projects

  • Take ownership of driving projects to on-time completion, with minimal prompting and direction

  • Work with product managers and project stakeholders to understand business requirements, receive feedback, and resolve issues

  • Translate business needs into user stories that can be understood by the software engineers and quality assurance testers

  • Apply an in-depth analysis to all projects as part of the design process, gathering the details of all business/functional requirements, guiding the business in fleshing out undefined requirements, and translating that to system/technical requirements

  • Use critical thinking to determine the best fit for new functionality within the existing system and understand impacts and touch points

  • Collaborate with the development team on software architecture

  • Review product documentation for accuracy

  • Answer questions from the software engineering team and understand the implementation of user stories; ensure that user stories meet the business objectives of the stakeholders

  • Reviewing test plans to ensure the requirements were interpreted correctly

  • Manage changes to requirements or scope creep through effective change management processes

  • Field questions from internal software implementation, training, and support teams

  • Assist in the user interface design of software products

  • Engage in effective and professional communication, by requesting and providing information in a clear manner when communicating with business users, our development team, and other members of the IT department

Professional Qualifications

  • 5+ years' experience working in the software development lifecycle, including at least one year as a Business Analyst

  • Experience with full software development lifecycle

  • Excellent technical design, problem solving, and solution design skills

  • Experience analyzing and integrating complex systems and technologies

  • Experience gathering, interpreting and documenting business and functional requirements

  • Familiarity with .NET, C# and JavaScript for software development

  • Basic understanding of SQL, including the concepts of relational data, and ability to query tables

Attributes

  • Excellent collaborative skills, with strong written and verbal communication

  • Self-motivated team player who can run with a project and is willing to pitch in as needed

  • Proactive and positive approach to correcting issues

  • Natural problem solver

  • Facilitate collaboration among team members to drive solutions

  • Demonstrated "let's find a way to do it" attitude - no task is too big or too small

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Detail oriented

  • Willing to take on new tasks over time

  • Loves to learn, takes every opportunity they're given to develop knowledge and skills

  • Adapts to an established process, able to move projects along in a timeframe

Preferred

  • Completed degrees and/or certifications in related fields

  • Experience with Agile/Kanban/Scrum methodologies

  • Hands-on development experience

  • Experience with system testing and/or test planning
