Job Description
The Technical Director (TD) is client-facing but oversees select quoting the technical, program and project elements of multi-faceted and typically more sophisticated testing activities for primarily New Berlin ESFA location as directed by the Business Unit Manager or his appointed designee on select projects in accordance with all applicable company and regulatory guidelines. The TD may also quote, coordinate projects involving other ESFA and Eurofins site on a case by case basis. The TD also manages internal ESFA projects involving Client Services and Customer Onboarding for both maintenance and continued improvements purposes appointed by the Business Unit Manager. This can include training of client-facing personnel on current and/or new protocols, templates related to client service management for all ESFA Sites (Horsham, PA; Wilson, NC, Animal Health, IN, possibly west coast location in future). The TD may design and/or develop project quotations, protocols for experiments, understands operations of major instruments, shadows or at times assists other chemists, scientists, drafts reports, interprets data, writes reports but also peer reviews other data and/or reports especially for challenging, non-routine investigations, custom method development, method validation, unknown/material identification, failure analysis, simple deformulations, more complex product stability studies (leave simple studies to client service team), structural elucidations, select LEGAL or Insurance case support and select product testing/development work. The TD will be allowed to quote and work on Legal and Insurance projects pending additional training with Business Unit Manager and/or Business Cluster President.
- Act as primary client liason for more complex and challenging project, program management, discussion of results or reports, designing new experiments, and/or modifications to existing experiments, studies as needed to meet business and client objectives including quote outline.
- Draft and issue custom project quotes working closely with Business Unit Manager (BUM) and/or Scientists, Group Leaders at all ESFA locations to address specific client requirements and with suitable scientific approaches, timing, pricing and clear project, program or study deliverables. Assist with resetting client expectations and/or lab approach when the project goes astray.
- Manage appointed internal ESFA project work on department improvements related to Client Service Management of both current and new clients across all ESFA Sites (Eurofins SF Analytical (New Berlin, WI), Craft Technologies (Wilson, NC), GMP Microbiology in Horsham, PA, Animal Health in Indiana, possibly future west coast acquisition(s).
- Maintain proficiency in all corporate sales-based software (CRM, comLIMS, BI, DMS, Euro CSR, Element LIMS). Provide training if and when needed for current ESFA client-facing roles as well as potential new additions to the ESFA Sales Team.
- At times oversee select testing activities as directed by BUM or designee in accordance with all applicable company and regulatory guidelines to alleviate demand or volume on BUM and/or Cluster President.
- Monitor project timing and proactively take action working with the lab to re-prioritize resources and/or client expectations to ensure quoted turnaround times are met to the extent possible and client expectations are achieved to the full extent possible
- Understand sample preparation and wet chemistry techniques that include but are not limited to gravimetry, titrimetry, colorimetry and others as needed including sample preparation, isolations, filtrations, extractions.
- Understand operation and capability of instrumentation available that will include but is not limited to FTIR, HPLC-UV/VIS, RI, PDAD, ELSD, LCMS(MS), Prep LC, GCFID/ECD, GCMS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, AA, IC, FIA, LECO N2, Calorimetry, Physical and Thermal Analysis (includes DSC, TGA, DMA - outsourced) NMR interpretation, ELISA, RT-PCR 16S and NGS speciation, other instruments and techniques as needed to meet customer expectations (includes outsourcing selective testing when appropriate).
- Understand and document method transfers, development work, validations/verifications and assist with reporting and peer review when requested.
- Maintain neat and accurate records.
- Interact with clients to assist in selection of test methods and interpretation of test data. Assist Sales and Business Team members on quote review if requested. Build templates and checklists enabling the client service team to more effectively quote, manage routine water, food, ingredient, monograph testing and simple product stability studies.
- Assist with drafting and/or reviewing reports to clients when requested (after suitable training period).
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality. Some consideration may be given to this person working 11 am - 8 pm cst to handle west coast clients and alleviate after-hours emails, requests to BUM, Cluster President
- Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner
- Performs other duties as assigned which may include field sampling at client, warehouse or detention location(s) especially for LEGAL, Insurance Projects
- Assist with case studies, white papers, attending sales-related meetings if requested by ESFA Executive Management (BUM, President) or for marketing purposes.
- Attend industry-appropriate symposia, training, webinars, journals to remain current on analytical techniques, new developments.
- Note - This position will be eligible for quarterly commission payments based on quotes issued, WON above quarterly quota ($250K/qtr initially), invoiced work and contribution to ESFA growth, profit and performance.
- This role may direct ESFA cluster scientists on select projects
Qualifications
The Ideal Candidate Would Possess:
- Experience in monographs, medicated animal feed, GMP compliant work
- BS in Chemistry, Food Science minimum with Master preferred or related field with at least 3 years experience with commercial testing laboratories.

- Command of MSOffice, CommLIMS, eLIMS, CRM, other common IT platforms
- Ability to perform at a high level remotely and when unsupervised.
- Knowledge of ISO 17025, DEA, GXP, FDA and related guidance.
- Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship
