Job description
Are you interested in playing an important role in a key government Department that offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the decision making that affects the whole of the UK? We are seeking two highly motivated individuals to join our Strategy, Planning & Projects (SPP) team.
The SPP team are a hard-working and energetic team, comprising 67 roles across our London and Darlington offices, focused on two major areas:
- "Strategic Projects", a flexible cross-Treasury resource that provides rapid support to highest priority areas of work across the department. Recent projects we've supported include: the Covid 19 Response; the Health and Social Care levy; and, the creation of the UK Infrastructure Bank;
- The "Strategy, Planning & Change" team, which supports the Treasury's Executive Management Board (EMB) on departmental strategy, performance, and risk.
We're looking for two Strategy and Policy advisers to join us in undertaking various projects across the department. Members of the team are seconded to short (typically c.3-4 month) projects in different areas of the department. Roles may involve providing advice and analysis on policy issues, helping teams to structure their work and/or ensuring the department delivers its priorities. These projects move in accordance with business need, to work on the highest - often Ministerial - priority issues.
Responsibilities will vary depending on the nature of the project you are completing. However, across the role responsibilities will include:
- Developing knowledge and understanding of new policy areas to support robust and evidence-based policy solutions
- Building key relationships and working collaboratively with a wide and diverse range of HMT teams and government partners, including integrating effectively and supporting leadership of project teams
- Coordinating advice and briefing for Ministers, senior officials and other partners on a range of policies. This includes drafting high-quality products including advice, parliamentary questions and scripts, correspondence and publications
- Promoting a strategic outlook, innovation and creativity to build a positive impact on HM Treasury's approach to policy making
Project roles require a wide range of skills, and we pride ourselves on our strategic capability and project management expertise. Successful candidates will need to be motivated self-starters who are able to pick up new content quickly and work independently with other parts of Treasury and departments to drive forward high-priority work. These roles are well-suited to candidates who are looking to develop their policy and project skills by developing and providing advice to Ministers and Senior Officials on cross-cutting, high-profile issues.
These roles can be based in London (1 Horse Guards Road), Norwich (Rosebery Court) or Darlington (Bishopsgate House until the office in central Darlington is established in 2022). The Darlington Economic Campus is a pioneering new cross-government hub which will bring together people across departments and public organisations to play an active role in the most important issues of the day. The work of the Campus will make a real difference to people both UK and internationally. There will be substantial career opportunities and exciting prospects - a career at the Campus means you will be working at the heart of Government, with access to the benefits and fantastic opportunities offered by the civil service. This role is based at HM Treasury and we will be joined on the campus by:
