About the Environment Agency
If you're part of the Environment Agency, you're part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment for generations to come, tackling issues of national importance across a huge variety of disciplines. Our responsibilities span major industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation. Such a broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams and exceptional leadership: together, we'll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.
Your role with us
This is an opportunity to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment by training as a Permitting Officer. Permitting is the foundation of regulation, and crucial to the economy, people, and wildlife. By offering advice and assessing risk, you'll ensure we protect the environment whilst enabling businesses to operate. We'll teach you how to process applications for environment permits for industrial sectors including waste electricals and electronic equipment, deposit for recovery, clinical waste, metals waste and inert landfill. This could cover sites of high public interest.
You'll join our National Permitting Service where teams work together to assess over 14,000 applications each year across a wide range of activities and permitting regimes. It's a fast-paced environment, offering plenty of opportunity to learn new skills and take on responsibility for people and projects.
Who we're looking for
You're likely to have some relevant technical knowledge in an area such as waste treatment, oil and gas or air quality in relation to environmental management and environmental risk assessment. Any exposure to environmental permitting would be beneficial.
We're looking for well-organised people who are computer literate and able to manage a busy workload. You'll be ready to deliver to a high standard and to tight deadlines. To achieve this, you'll need to develop and maintain excellent working relationships. As well as influencing others and carrying out diverse negotiations, you must also be prepared to have difficult conversations and clearly explain your decisions. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are therefore essential.
Your benefits with us
You will benefit from a culture that embraces difference and includes everyone, where you will feel supported and trusted to do the right thing. We will invest in you and allow you to grow and shape your career. What's more, you'll be able to have access to our great benefits package, including generous annual leave, an excellent pension, flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to be part of a variety of staff networks.
We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. To achieve this, we welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation and religion. We also welcome applications for flexible working patterns.
