Job description
The Manufacturing Technology Centre is a UK success story - created to provide manufacturing systems solutions in an agile environment in partnership with industry, academia and other institutions. Working in partnership with Consilium Recruit the MTC has a unique opportunity for a Technical Specialist. You will specialise in Automation & Robotics, you will deliver technical excellence across a portfolio of projects, provide thought leadership on the delivery of innovative technical solutions in maturing, promising research ideas, and into impactful manufacturing capability, as well as play a leadership role in the delivery of innovative project outputs;
You will own the impact of existing products and developing Value Propositions, to raise the Industrial Sectors' awareness of the existing products and emerging value propositions whose development and impact you lead, and support the Technology Sector and Industrial Sectors in the development of their pipelines and project proposals;

The Role
The Technical Specialist role is wide ranging role that will be developing marketing strategies for a wide range of technical products and industrial sector teams across the MTC. This role will be a crucial interface between the product development and technical teams and the MTC's business development community, taking the lead on market positioning and segmentation activities. It involves a broad range of tasks, including market segmentation, positioning, performing market research, the development of value propositions and messaging and defining strategic marketing campaigns and activities.
Duties and responsibilities include:
To contribute to technical and business strategies of the department by developing specific technical - and contribute to multi-theme - roadmaps that define how technology based value propositions can be developed to meet the manufacturing challenges identified by the Industrial Sectors;
Identify collaborative research and development funding opportunities and lead proposals to fund the development of the value propositions you lead;
Ensure that your colleagues receive the most appropriate technical guidance and governance in the delivery of their project work;
Mentor and coach colleagues in an empathetic manner;
Provide technical governance as required for all aspects of MTC's proposal and project delivery processes;
The Technical Specialist is also likely to take on specific responsibilities as agreed by the Technology Group's management team, including but not exclusive of: Management of specific hardware or software; Assessment of the engineers' and department's technical capabilities and development needs; Development of resourcing options and team competencies.
The Person
The successful candidate for the role of Technical Specalist will have/be:
A Degree calibre engineer, in a related discipline: Computer-Science, Robotics, Automation, or other appropriate Engineering discipline and complementary industrial experience for the role.
Confident to advise external customers and create concept designs of automation solutions, right through to commissioning robotics/automation cells and equipment on site (FAT/SAT, CE marking of equipment or awareness);
Expert knowledge of automation and robotics systems and understanding of commercially available and developing technologies relating to: safety systems, robot programming
kinematics, dynamics, motion / pathway planning, closed-loop control system, computer vision;
Experience with automation / robotics software, or software development (ROS, C++, Python) for robotics, experience developing embedded software, or knowledgeable of their application and industrial limitations. Ideally also knowledgeable of PLCs, controls and programming.
Understanding of electrical standards, e.g. IEC (phone number removed), PUWER, Machinery Directive, Certified Machine Safety Expert (CSME), understanding and application of Safety Integrity Level (SIL).
