Detector Engineer

£35,000 - £42,500 plus discretionary bonus, 30 days annual leave and enhanced pension

Quantum Detectors is a spinout from STFC and Diamond Light Source, based at Harwell Campus. Quantum Detectors develops technology and provides a route to market for instrumentation developed by Diamond, STFC and other internationally renowned facilities. Our products are well respected and installed in leading universities and national labs around the world.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant team who are passionate about increasing the rate of scientific discovery by delivering cutting-edge technology to the world's leading laboratories. Global travel is a part of this role, with up to 20% of their time being spent in locations commonly including Western Europe, North America, and Japan.

Based at Harwell Campus, the Detector Engineer plays a key role in the development of new detector technology for our X-ray and Transmission Electron Microscopy product lines.

Working in our R&D team, the Detector Engineer drives the evolution of prototypes into products. They are also responsible for installation, troubleshooting and servicing of Quantum Detectors' products around the world. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on individual with experience in the design, validation, and debugging of electronic equipment and capable of safely handling sensitive semiconductor components. The position requires close interaction with a range of existing staff with different backgrounds so good communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities:

● Development, validation and debugging of detector systems

● Installation, site acceptance and troubleshooting of X-Ray and direct electron detectors at customer sites

● Definition of calibration and quality assurance procedures

● Installation of operating systems and custom software

● Meticulous record-keeping

● Point of contact for production staff

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

● Degree in Electronic Engineering, Physics or related discipline

● Good interpersonal skills and communication

● Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team

● Self-motivated and with excellent attention to detail

Desirable Qualifications & Experience:

● Experience in operating electron microscopes or working at synchrotrons considered favorably

● Experience in the use of electronic test equipment (Multimeters, Oscilloscopes etc.)

● Ability to read and understand schematics for electronic devices

● Electronic design and layout

● Experience with Linux and Windows operating systems

● Knowledge of particle detection techniques and readout electronics

Further Information

● Must be available to travel within the UK and abroad, including overnight absences

● Must have full UK or EU driving licence

This permanent full-time position offers a 35-hour working week, 30 days holiday, and a generous pension contribution.
