Job description

Primary Purpose:

Assist the underwriters in the day to day operations of the underwriting department and to take on tasks that do not require the direct decision making of an underwriter. Execute on the instructions of an underwriter to obtain additional information or take specific actions on a given risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Perform pre-underwriting reviews of new and renewal business to determine completeness of submissions and if any additional information is needed for full underwriting review
  • Document observations made during pre-reviews of files to assist underwriters is expediting the decision making process
  • Decline submissions which are significantly outside of underwriting guidelines
  • Amend or update quotes based on instructions of underwriters
  • Complete renewal pre-reviews and may approve renewal referrals within authority
  • May assist underwriters by reviewing fleet accounts to determine if all required information is provided and request any needed additional documents
  • Review inspection reports and determine if additional underwriting review is required as well as determine if changes are needed to the policy based on inspection results
  • Produce written correspondence to be sent to agents and customers for compliance purposes

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Ability to establish relationships with internal business partners
  • Ability to establish and maintain agency relationships
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability and desire to learn and effectively use computer based underwriting systems to manage workflow
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and timeliness in order to meet customer service expectations
  • Strong customer service skills, ability to handle multiple tasks and work in a fast paced environment meeting aggressive business deadlines
  • Professional phone etiquette and interpersonal skills


Desired Skills:
  • 1+ years of experience and an assistant underwriter or agency CSR
  • Experience in NGIC commercial service as QQ rep or higher
  • Course work completed towards Bachelor Degree
  • Advanced in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Thorough knowledge of the Policy Processing systems
  • Ability to effectively prioritize own tasks and work independently
  • Multi-tasking abilities
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Ability to cultivate cross-functional relationships
