Job description

I. General duties:

Maintain track of all ranch operations - work with Operations Manager to keep operations on schedule and within budget.

Monitor all ranch activities daily - meet with operations manager daily to discuss operations


Daily Costs: track costs daily for all ranch operations except for irrigation.


Review weekly campaign report and discuss ranch manager detailing:

This report is formally produced by Office Staff

a. operations and acres completed,

b cost per acre for labor by operation

c. acres per day completed

d. estimated time to complete the total acres / date the operation will be completed

This report should be prepared each Friday and delivered to ranch manager for all operations through Thursday of the current week


Make head counts of crews on the ranch and verify that the counts agree with the daily time sheets.



II. Irrigation System

Schedule Irrigation weekly using evapotranspiration method and information as provided through CIMIS (California Irrigation Management Information System).

a. Use sensors as verification.

b. Discuss scheduling weekly with Ranch Operations Manager.



Coordinate with Water Resources Manager and maintain oversight of all below tasks


A. Pumps & Wells

1. Maintain database of well and lift pump running hours and quantity pumped.

2. Arrange for annual well tests to validate pumping capacity, efficiency of pumping plants and status of water table.

3. Arrange for annual water quality test to verify water quality of each well

B. Filter Station & Infield Systems.

1. Monitor acid and fertilizer injection systems.

a. verify that these systems are functioning correctly that acid system is set to and maintaining appropriate pH.

b. Provide weekly report on quantity of acid in each filter station tank and amount of acid applied in total gallons and gallons per acre.

c. Verify gallons of acid used per acre foot of water applied.

2. Verify operating system pressure and perform annual efficiency survey of drip system.

a. Check the pressures at the filters and be sure they are appropriate for the system.

b. Verify that irrigator or irrigation foreman is checking lateral pressures on the extreme end of each block at least once per irrigation.

3. Maintain database of filter station operating hours and application amounts.

a. Provide weekly report showing acre inches of water applied by block


III. Field Operations.


1. Walk fields observing health of trees and watching for problems with pests, diseases or other symptoms that deviate from acceptable, discuss with ranch manager and consultants as appropriate


2. Meet and confer with ranch soils and nutrition consultant and ranch manager to discuss and prepare fertility programs.

a. Arrange to have soil and leaf tissues collected for analyses and maintain comparative databases of results. Provide updates of this database to ranch manager

b. Schedule Fertilizer applications and maintain database of fertilizer and amendment applications in conjunction with the annual fertilizer plan.


c. Monthly reconcile applications of fertilizers to fertilizer plan and quantities purchased and reported use review this report with ranch manager


4. Attend educational seminars to improve knowledge on irrigation, soils, pest, disease and fertility. Meet with outside manufacturers representatives and other professionals to maintain awareness of new developments in materials.


5. Meet and confer with ranch pest control advisor and ranch manager to discuss recommendations

a. Calibrate spray rigs based on PCA recommendations and verify with ranch manager.

b. prepare mix instructions for spray rigs and verify that they are being followed

c. Check materials inventory at the end of each block and reconcile inventory to materials purchased and materials reported used. Prepare actual rate applied per treated acre at end of each block and when the application operation is completed

d. Check groundspeed of application equipment and confirm that it falls within acceptable deviations from the recommendation.

6. Chemical & Fertilizers Purchases
