Position Summary
The La Mesa Police Department is currently looking for qualified candidates that want to be a part of the service to our community. A Community Services Officer requires the availability to work flexible days and hours and respond to call-outs if needed. For example, this may include shifts beginning at 6:00 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m., or shifts beginning at 2:00 p.m. and sending at midnight, and also may include weekends.
Please note that successful candidates in this recruitment must undergo a polygraph examination and successfully pass a thorough background investigation.

To perform a variety of specialized para-professional law enforcement duties in a non-sworn capacity including taking crime reports, performing traffic control and responding to routine burglaries and traffic accidents; to provide information to the general public and answer citizen inquiries; and to perform a variety of other non-sworn law enforcement functions in support of the Police Department.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
* Respond to general inquiries from the public at the front counter, on the phone or in the field; take and process crime reports; provide information, assistance and various forms.
* Conduct basic evidence collection documentation at crime scenes; assist investigations unit with crime follow-up; interview court mandated registrants; complete basic property evidence duties.
* Document minor and non-injury collisions that occur within the City's jurisdiction; request the assistance of sworn law enforcement personnel as required; assist in the investigation of minor and serious injury collisions.
* Input various reports, data and other information into the computer including animal control logs, and accident reports.
* Perform traffic control for accident scenes, public works operations, and special events.
* Respond to violations of parking ordinances; issues citations as necessary; generate and print parking permits for the downtown area; tow vehicles in violation of ordinances.
* Coordinate school safety patrol and bicycle safety programs including bicycle rodeos; develop and print literature for school programs; complete child safety seat inspections.
* Safely operate a motor vehicle, to include a full-size pick-up truck, while pulling a light weight trailer, during the scope of duties.
* Comply with state and local laws and follow department rules, regulations, and procedures.
* Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. An Associate's degree or equivalent education in criminal justice, law enforcement, evidence technology, psychology, communications or a related field is desirable.
Experience:
At leasttwo years of full-time responsible public contact experience. Familiarity of law enforcement functions is desirable.
License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
Examination Process

The examination process may consist of any or all of the following components: written exam, practical skills evaluation, and an appraisal interview. Note: Successful candidates must undergo a polygraph examination and successfully pass a thorough background investigation. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation. The medical evaluation includes an alcohol/drug screen.
