GILLIG LLC is the largest and most dependable manufacturer of Heavy Duty Transit Buses in North America. Our customers are in all 50 states, and include cities, counties, transit districts, universities and major private fleet operators. We are headquartered in Livermore, CA.
SUMMARY
As the Director, Human Resources you will be a key member of the HR leadership team. You will use your deep knowledge of full cycle HR and strategic mindset to improve HR processes, introduce and implement strategies that measurably support business objectives and HR programs/functions for the manufacturing production organization, focus on supporting strong employee relations, engagement and relationships with the Union, all while promoting GILLIG's mission, values and goals.
This role requires an experienced HR professional with outstanding people skills and the ability to build relationships throughout the organizational structure. You will be able to manage HR programs, oversee employment needs of the Union employees and lead staff using a collaborative, team building style. This position reports to the Vice President, Human Resources and will manage 2-3 direct reports.
THE DAY TO DAY
Employee/Labor Relations
• Maintains satisfactory labor-management relations through a variety of techniques
• Participates in collective bargaining negotiations and ensures compliance with collective bargaining agreements
• Effectively recommends hiring, promotion, transfers, termination, and disciplinary actions in accordance with company policies and CBA of all union employees
• Investigates issues such as working conditions, disciplinary actions, and employee and applicant appeals and grievances. Provides guidance and recommendations for resolution to leadership
• Formulates and recommends program goals and objectives in all areas of employee relations
• Oversees the development and implementation of employee relations activities, surveys and engagement/retention efforts
• Addresses employee grievances and disputes
• Builds relationships with production leadership and employees
Compliance Management
• Conducts surveys, interviews, and other research related to human resource policies, and other labor negotiations; collects information and reports results to VP, HR
• Monitors and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance
• Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, and employment law; applies this knowledge to recommend changes in policy, practice, and resources to VP of HR
Training & Development
• Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements processes, training, initiatives, to support the organizations human resource compliance and strategy needs for manufacturing organization
HRIS Management
• Drives changes to HRIS to improve HR data integrity, enhance HRIS reporting and increase efficiencies of HR processes/programs
• Maintains employee records, assuring compliance and accuracy
• Leads future HRIS system changes and enhancements
Union Payroll & Benefits
• Manages all changes and communication related to any HR systems, policies, programs and/or processes that impact Union payroll and benefits
• Ensures union payroll and benefits processes are consistent, efficient and accurate
Direct Report Management
• Oversees, motivates, supports and manages the daily workflow of direct reports and area of responsibility
In addition to your core responsibilities, you will also provide support for our Occupational Health and Safety programs, Workers Compensation, Leave of Absence administration, and HR programs as well as other duties/responsibilities as assigned

ABOUT YOU
• Bachelor's Degree Human Resources or related field
• Minimum 8 years of experience in human resources with minimum of 3 years labor relations experience preferred.
• Minimum 3 years managing others
• SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential preferred
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Highly organized
• Superior interpersonal/people skills
• Detail oriented
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Thorough knowledge of labor relations practices and legal requirements
• Excellent managerial skills and ability to evaluate the work of others
• Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret and communicate data
• Knowledge of HR related federal, state and local laws and regulations
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
• Starting time 5:00 am
• Fast paced dynamic environment
• Pace of work/deadline pressures, demands for thoroughness or accuracy
• Primarily office environment, however, regular visits to manufacturing floor and environment
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
• Minimal to no travel requirements
