The Cepheid R&D Toolmaker position is responsible for an out of the box mindset from design to manufacture. Employing this creativity supporting Cepheid's Innovation Core group in the development of innovative injection-molding tools and parts in support of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) research projects.

This position is part of the Innovation Organization and will be located in Lodi, CA. Innovation evaluates new technologies to ensure Cepheid continues to provide best in class diagnostics. The mission of Cepheid's R&D tooling & molding group is to maintain Cepheid's competitive advantage in injection molding by continuously developing, improving, and maintaining in-house, high-quality, state-of-the-art molding capabilities.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

• Take a hands-on, proactive role working on the shop floor, where creativity is the most useful skill set. Deploy this asset daily to problem solve and develop Cepheid's newest technology to drive innovation and growth in a state-of-the-art facility.
• This R&D toolmaker role will contribute to part/tool/mold design as a critical member of the technical team, enabling delivery of small volume, quick-turn design iterations to support Cepheid IVD plastics R&D projects.
• Supports the team with knowledge and processes for high-quality molding and ensure parts & processes are designed for manufacturability to enable accelerated commercialization

The essential requirements

• Successful completion of apprentice toolmaker program or a minimum of 10 years of experience working hands-on as a tool/mold maker.

• Builds tools and mold components from start to finish (incl. outside purchase of bases cavity sets, etc. as needed) via CNC machining, EDM, and other standard & non-standard techniques.

• Setup program (MasterCAM Wire) and operate CNC equipment (Wire, Sinker EDM, Mill)
• Setup and operate manual machining equipment.
• Measure and inspect finished electrodes and machined mold components for accuracy during all manufacturing stages.
• Tool assembly & disassembly.
• Flexibility to work around any combinations of molded components including LSR and non-standard materials/substrates.
• Attend and collaborate in design review for molded and machined parts.
• Clearly communicates and explains the most efficient method of manufacture to others
• Suggests and test new tool and mold making equipment.
• Assesses completed jobs for improvements with necessary personnel for future efficiency.
• Mentor apprentices in modern toolmaking practices and support them in their daily tasks as needed.
• Trains and guides assigned helpers as needed when repairing or maintaining Molds.
• Collaborate with processing engineers to address mold and part issues as they arrive and suggest possible solutions.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

• CNC programming skills (MasterCAM preferred).
• CAD software skills (SolidWorks preferred).
• Hands-on experience with standard tool making processes & equipment, including. traditional milling/lathe, CNC milling/lathe, wire EDM, sinker EDM, TIG welding, and grinding/polishing.

• Basic understanding of standard injection molding processes and equipment, including knowledge of hot runner systems.
