Why Join Us?

Be a hero for our rare disease patients

At Ultragenyx, we fundamentally believe that taking real impactful action to care for the needs of patients and our people is always the right thing to do. To achieve this goal, our vision is to lead the future of rare disease medicine. For us, this means going where other biopharma companies won't go - challenging the status quo and creating a new model that advances our field so more patients and caregivers can benefit from life-changing treatments. We do this by following the science, applying a novel rapid development approach, making innovative medicines at fair and reasonable prices, and creating a collaborative ecosystem to reach patients in ways that are most meaningful for them.

Our commitment and care for patients extends to our people, so culture is an essential cornerstone for Ultragenyx. We remain continuously focused on creating a supportive and inclusive environment of profound learning and growth - so employees can thrive in all areas of their lives, in and outside of work. Ultimately, we want to be an organization where we would be proud for our family, friends and children to work.

If you want to have a meaningful impact, do the best work of your career, and grow a lot, both professionally and personally, come join our team. During the COVID-19 Outbreak, we are committed to our hiring process. The health and safety of our employees and prospective employees take priority which means at this time our approach will include video discussions, interviews, and onboarding.

US based roles: starting on January 3rd, 2022, full vaccination against COVID-19 is a condition of employment at Ultragenyx. This requirement applies to almost all roles at Ultragenyx based in the U.S., with very limited exceptions. If you are unable to receive a COVID-19 vaccine due to a disability, serious medical condition, or because it would violate your sincerely held religious belief, you will have an opportunity to request a reasonable accommodation.

This position is part of the Research department in our Translational Science organization. It will expose the incumbent to research drug development, including providing guidance at project team meetings, contributing to manuscript preparation, patent applications, and attending conferences. The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of protein sciences from vector/construct design and synthesis, protein expression in mammalian cell lines either by transient or stable cell line methods, protein purification, formulation, and protein characterization. An interest in technology development and a desire to work cross-functionally is necessary.

The candidate will have a fundamental understanding of all aspects of protein production. They will produce technical reports to support transfer to the Bioanalytical Development department, CROs, and Technical Operations, and Manufacturing. They will implement tasks and work to contribute to the success of the group and the Research Department. They will advise colleagues in the Protein Sciences Group and communicate data analysis, conclusions, and project proposals to inter-disciplinary members in Translational Sciences, Translational Research management teams, and CROs

Work Model:

This role typically requires that the majority of the work be conducted on-site and thus will be subject to certain on-site safety protocols during the pandemic.

Responsibilities:

* Implement and characterize processes to express and purify multiple protein targets to meet project needs.
* Improve current protocols and develop new processes to enhance productivity and quality of protein for multiple projects in parallel.
* Design novel expression vectors for transient and stable line generation to produce research-grade proteins. Manage gene synthesis CROs for their specific projects.
* Help create stable cell lines using conventional or novel strategies to enhance protein production capacity.
* Purify recombinant proteins for pilot and research projects or new programs based on resource needs and timelines.
* Support the routine maintenance of multiple cell lines in cell culture and managing consumables and reagents for all group parts.
* Evaluate expression with appropriate biochemical and analytical techniques such as SDS-PAGE, HPLC, Western, ELISA
* Provide quantitative analysis and interpretation of data using statistical software (i.e., JMP, GraphPad Prism, SigmaStat).
* Maintain a record of experiments and results with a high degree of thoughtfulness.
* Work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
* Create lab notebooks and technical reports, facilitate technology transfer to CROs, Technical Operations/CMC, and Bioanalytical Development department stakeholders, and contribute to manuscripts/publications and patent applications.
* Be an expert on protein projects, working with internal teams and CROs, providing solutions for optimizing protein expression and purification.
* Determine methods and procedures on new assignments, executing tasks independently, and may coordinate activities of other personnel.
