Job description

Job Title: Human Resources Partner
Department: Human Resources Department
Location: Oakland, CA, Washington, DC or Remote
Reports To: Managing HR Partner
Supervises: n/a

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice - a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.

Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope: The HR Partner will play a significant and visible role in moving Sierra Club's strategic and operational initiatives forward by building relationships within their client group as an innovative and trusted partner. You'll report to the Managing Human Resources Partner and be part of a team of HR Partners in a larger Human Resources Department.

We expect that employees in this role's client group will know you by name, know how to get in touch, and are confident that any challenge they bring will be met with compassion, understanding, and respect. We are looking to hire individuals who believe in the potential of Human Resources and sincerely want to help others. For that reason, we are significantly expanding our candidate search and are explicitly looking for dedicated professionals who are excited to work with passionate social and environmental justice advocates and who can bring highly advanced emotional, relational, and equity skills and practice to a Human Resources framework.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

Provide support, advice, and guidance to staff and managers on navigating challenging interpersonal dynamics, especially across identity and positional authority. Counsel managers on handling conversations about performance management (coaching, providing feedback, career growth, corrective actions and performance improvement plans).

While you will serve as the key point of contact for staff and managers in your client group for navigating HR issues like a traditional HR Partner, you will also be a key catalyst in supporting our significant internal change processes - including an equity transformation.
    • Project management experience with the ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously. A Team Player Resourceful and Adaptable. Nothing is beneath or above you. You are quick to always lend a hand, or two! You are able to earn influence without authority and naturally seek to support both small projects or large strategic goals. You can easily gain trust from team members and are known for supporting them to ensure they are set up for success.

Your decision-making is consistent, intentional, and committed to creating equitable outcomes at all levels. You have led high-performing and leaderful teams across group identities.
