Job description

Together, we can beat cancer.

At Varian, a Siemens Healthineers Company, we bring together the world's best talent to realize our vision of a world without fear of cancer. Together, we work passionately to develop and deliver easy-to-use, efficient oncology solutions. If you want to be part of this important mission, we want to hear from you.

The Global Translational Science (GTS) team at Varian is seeking a highly motivated and accomplished scientist to join Varian Medical Affairs group to advance our pre-clinical and clinical pipeline through discovery and translational research.

As the central biological science team in Varian, GTS is uniquely positioned to conduct research that transforms today's cancer treatments: inventing the next-generation radiotherapy and physical therapies, identifying novel immunotherapy combinations and advancing precision medicine through artificial intelligence. In addition to innovating internally in our team, we work with teams specialized in biomarkers, physics and engineering, world-renowned academic research groups, biopharma partners and Varian's Clinical Research team to translate the discoveries into the clinic.

The senior scientist/principal scientist will report to the Director of Research Science and function as a principal investigator, leading cross-functional activities to identify unmet clinical needs, generating original research, and advancing projects from discovery to clinical trials.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify high-impact clinical needs and initiate new areas of investigation that can be incorporated into a clinical development program.

• Research areas include (but not limited to): identifying novel combination therapies, understanding the immune mechanisms of a given therapy, advancing precision medicine by biomarkers, and incorporating artificial intelligence to accelerate discovery and translational research.

• Design hypothesis-driven experiments and select the appropriate technologies and models in vitro, in vivo or ex vivo.

• Lead projects with cross-functional teams (senior scientist), and a small team (principal scientist) of highly accomplished and driven scientists/senior scientists.

• Build external collaborations that complement internal efforts and work with the business development team to establish industry partnerships.

• Present at cross-functional seminars (audiences of 100+), to the leadership team, and participate in decision-making.

• Present at high-profile conferences and publish in high-impact journals.

• Participate in the writing of FDA documents (IDE and IND) and patent applications.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in oncology, radiobiology, immuno-oncology or a related field with 3+ years (senior scientist) or 6+ years (principal scientist) of relevant postdoctoral research experience in academia or industry.

• Prior experience in industry and understanding of the R&D process is a strong plus.

• Excellence and productivity in scientific research as demonstrated by first or senior authorship of publications, conference presentations and/or primary inventorship of patents.

• A track record of robust science, reproducible data and attention to detail.

• Demonstrated ability to function as a project lead (senior scientist) or team lead (principal scientist). Able to identify high-impact clinical needs and find creative solutions, generate original ideas and manage strategies and deadlines.

• Strong communication, teamwork and organization skills are essential as the candidate is expected to interact with diverse groups within Varian as well as external collaborators.

• Be part of a learning environment; being open to suggestions and striving for continuous self-improvement.

• Openness to new ideas, and a strong desire to transform cancer treatment through innovation.
