Job description
At Bristol Myers Squibb, we are inspired by a single vision - transforming patients' lives through science. In oncology, hematology, immunology and cardiovascular disease - and one of the most diverse and promising pipelines in the industry - each of our passionate colleagues contribute to innovations that drive meaningful change. We bring a human touch to every treatment we pioneer. Join us and make a difference.
Principal Scientist - Biochemistry - Leads Discovery & Optimization, Redwood City, CA
The Leads Discovery & Optimization (LDO) is a dynamic organization that supports the entire continuum of drug discovery (from lead identification to clinical candidate delivery) at Bristol Myers Squibb. The organization leverages state of the art technologies, complemented by deep subject matter expertise and broad scientific knowledge, to deliver innovative and comprehensive preclinical in vitro datasets to support our drug discovery pipeline in disease areas such as cell therapy, oncology, immunology, fibrosis and cardiovascular diseases.
The LDO Redwood City team is are a highly motivated and innovative scientist drive in vitro biochemical and biophysical strategy for enabling the Oncology portfolio. This individual will be expected to collaborate within and across project teams and geographies to enable characterization of therapeutic mechanisms of action, assessment of drug-target interaction energetics to drive SAR, and determination of activity and binding kinetics to guide translational pharmacology. The successful candidate will have a strong applied biochemistry background with industry experience in enzyme activity assay development, ideally using quantitative methods such as mass spectrometry, calorimetry, or rapid kinetics (stopped and quenched flow) techniques. The individual will be expected to spend time in the laboratory developing and conducting enzyme/biochemical assays in support of the drug discovery portfolio. Hands-on experience with standard higher-throughput solution and cellular assay formats such as plate-based optical detection including fluorescence, FRET, HTRF, luminescence, ALPHA technology, ELISA and nucleic acid-based (RT-qPCR) assay formats is a plus.
The Principal Scientist will be expected to prepare and deliver effective presentations to project stakeholders. The ideal candidate will balance technical skills with critical-thinking and have demonstrated a record of accomplishment of rapidly driving high quality, high-impact projects to completion. The successful candidate will have a can-do attitude and a drive to proactively facilitate the continuous improvement of processes and culture.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide scientific expertise and technical leadership in Mechanistic Studies
- Demonstrate ability in de novo biochemical, cellular, and biophysical assay design
- Knowledge of general bioassay optical detection methods including fluorescence, HTRF, ELISA, absorbance, and luminescence, and/or biophysical assays such as SPR, thermal shift, MST, and ITC
- Demonstrate expertise in data capture and analysis, applied statistical analysis, quality control, and quality assurance measures
- Effectively organize and present data for consumption across drug discovery scientific disciplines
Qualifications:
- PhD with 5+ years of relevant industry experience, or M.S. with 10 years or more of industry experience in biochemistry, enzymology or related scientific discipline
- In depth knowledge of quantitative bioassay approaches such as calorimetry, fluorescence, HTRF, and luminescence
- Hands on experience with automated liquid handlers and microtiter plate readers
- Practical experience in cell-based assay development and execution, with a strong background in de novo assay design, quality control, and high-throughput processes
- Knowledge and development of biochemical mass spectrometry assays is a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey complicated scientific results to a broad audience
