Job Summary:

We are currently seeking a Senior/Principal Scientist, External Process Research Lead to join our rapidly growing CMC team in San Diego. He/she will be responsible for the development of process technology for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and key intermediates, engaging in all facets of development from scale up synthesis to the commercially viable route. The successful candidate will lead the external process research team to design, develop, and enable scalable chemical processes, applying innovative chemistry, cutting edge technologies and statistical experimental design approaches. This position provides stimulating intellectual challenges and abundant career growth opportunities along the progression of the projects through various development phases. The ability to work on multi-disciplinary teams on internal and external cross-functional teams is essential.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

• Lead the external process research team to develop synthetic routes into safe, efficient and robust processes
• Serve as the primary liaison of the CMC team with the internal discovery project leads to identify needs for the key intermediates/lead molecules, and ensure timeline delivery and program progression
• Design and develop innovative and practical syntheses of key intermediates and drug candidates from gram to multi-kilogram scales, internally and through external CRO/CMO
• Growth opportunity of overseeing the API production from tox to cGMP CTM batches, when needed
• Close collaboration with other CMC functions such analytical development, manufacturing, formulation development, QC, QA, etc
• Author relevant DS sections for regulatory filings, when needed

Education and Experience requirements:

• Ph.D. or equivalent in synthetic organic chemistry
• 5+ years of relevant industry experience in small-molecule chemical process research & development
• State of the art knowledge of modern synthetic technology and deep understanding of reaction mechanism
• Experience with managing outsourced projects with contractors
• Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast paced, and collaborative environment
• Knowledge of API manufacturing is a plus
