Department Overview
Years of drought, extreme heat, and 129 million dead trees have created a "new normal" in California that requires PG&E to change its approach to how it designs and operates the electric system. Extreme weather events driven by climate change are causing unprecedented wildfires. As a result, PG&E is launching the Community Wildfire Safety Program (CWSP) to reduce wildfire threats and strengthen communities for the future. The company is bolstering wildfire prevention and emergency response efforts, putting in place new and enhanced safety measures, and hardening its electric system to help reduce wildfire risks and keep customers safe. A key tool in the CWSP portfolio is the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) Team, designed to de-energize portions of PG&E's system during extreme weather conditions, to mitigate the risk of catastrophic fire.
Position Summary
This year PG&E is continuing to enhance the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) process, a critical tool in which lines are de-energized during times of extreme fire danger to prevent utility ignitions. The PSPS Team is responsible for successfully executing de-energization events. This includes determining potential event scope, developing tools to assist with decision making, overall process development and refinement, and pre-planning and coordination across all teams involved in a PSPS event.
Preparing for PSPS events will be a significant effort as PG&E works in partnership with its customers, regulatory entities, civic leaders, and community leaders to reduce wildfire threats. The dedicated Project Management Office (PMO) works to effectively manage PSPS readiness across workstreams which include:
- Program design and decision making
- Program granularity
- Communications and stakeholder engagement
- Customer support
- Restoration strategy
- Training and execution
Each workstream includes numerous specific initiatives with the common goal of preparing for and successfully executing PSPS events. Members of the PMO team are be responsible for leading the overall PSPS work across all workstreams, monitoring progress, handling resourcing needs including providing additional resources when needed, and directing workstreams as issues arise.
Job Responsibilities
- Ability to build processes and manage projects throughout the different lifecycles of workstream and/or initiatives and across cross-functional business partners. Anticipates issues and develops innovative solutions. Demonstrates strong documentation and organization skills to support driving progress.
- Represents the program as a subject matter expert and stakeholder on process improvement teams, regulatory filings, data requests, and various stakeholder groups.
- Supports peers and partner organizations to develop and implement new and/ or improved processes, procedures, policies, controls and best practices to improve customer satisfaction, efficiencies, regulatory compliance and reduce costs.
- Ability to work comfortably with and manage large datasets with a strong attention to detail and data integrity.
- Participate and support PG&E's Emergency Operations Center for PSPS events.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Business, Computer Science, Engineering or other related field or equivalent work experience.
- Job-related experience, 2 years
Desired:
- Knowledge of electric utility processes, regulatory requirements, critical success factors, goals and initiatives
- Knowledge of project management, process improvement best practices, concepts, methods and techniques
- Skilled at working with cross-functional project teams
- Analytical and creative problem solving
- High level organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office tools, specifically Microsoft Excel; Experience with Microsoft Power BI or other similar tools
- Experience with Palantir Foundry is a plus
- Presentation skills to effectively convey complex issues to internal and external parties of various levels
