**Overview**
We are seeking an Associate Scientist, Protein Sciences for one of our clients, a start-up biotech company in South San Francisco that is developing therapeutic antibody candidates to tackle multiple neurodegenerative diseases. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, expression, purification, and biophysical characterization of novel antibody-effector fusion proteins that modulate inflammation for the treatment of human diseases. Our client is located in Lilly Gateway Labs in South San Francisco. This brand-new facility is designed specifically for early-stage biotech companies and offers a dynamic work environment. This position reports to the Director of Protein Chemistry and Analytics.
**Responsibilities**
+ Contribute to the engineering and production of new antibodies, novel antibody formats and antibody-fragment fusions with various effector modalities.
+ Production of recombinant proteins up to liter scale from mammalian cell lines (e.g., CHO cells and HEK cells) using standard purification methods (e.g., affinity chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, etc.)
+ Perform characterization on key reagents using protein analytical techniques (e.g., SDS-PAGE, HPLC chromatography, Octet, Western Blot, etc.)
+ Perform data analysis and summarize experimental results, with supervision as appropriate
+ Prepare and maintain cell culture reagents and media
+ Ensure sufficient laboratory supplies for daily laboratory operations
+ Generate, collect, analyze data and present scientific findings at internal research meetings
+ Collaborate with internal scientists and external collaborators to optimize batch production as applicable
+ Ensure proper operation and perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment
+ Assist other staff to complete laboratory tasks, as necessary
+ Maintain a clean and safe work environment
**Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree in Biochemical, Chemical, or Biology related disciplines with 5 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with 3 years relevant experience.
+ Experience in engineering, productions, and characterization of protein and antibody variants as preclinical leads.
+ Background in protein chemistry and protein structure and function is required.
+ Experience with growth and transfection of mammalian cells up to liter scale for transient and/or stable protein production is required.
+ Laboratory experience in protein purification techniques and analytical/characterization methods is required.
+ Background in immunology/inflammation/neuroinflammation is preferred.
+ Pharma/biotech experience is preferred.
+ Experience working in a cross disciplinary environment is preferred.
+ Excellent English oral communication skills in a scientific setting are required.
+ Excellent technical writing skills and ability to prepare written reports.
+ Strong data analysis skills and excellent organizational skills.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.
