Senior Scientist, Discovery Biology

ALX Oncology Inc. is a publicly-traded, clinical-stage immuno-oncology company focused on helping patients fight cancer by developing therapies that block the CD47 checkpoint pathway. Our lead candidate, evorpacept (ALX148), is a next-generation CD47-blocking therapeutic that combines a high-affinity CD47 binding domain with an inactivated proprietary Fc domain. ALX is headquartered in South San Francisco, California.

The candidate will be responsible for executing a diverse array of in vitro and ex vivo experiments in discovery biology. The ideal candidate will have solid knowledge of the tumor microenvironment, and will work with a highly collaborative team to utilize relevant ex vivo models for discovery and validation of targets, leading to novel therapies for the treatment of cancer.

Key Responsibilities

* Isolation and culture of primary human organoids, PBMCs and/or 3-dimensional co-culture of multi-cellular organotypic systems (tumor, stromal, endothelial and immune cells)
* Execution of a wide range of cellular immunological assays, including reporter assays, PBMC-based functional immune assays (ADCC/ADCP/MLR).
* Experience in cellular and molecular biology techniques, such as multi-color flow cytometry, MSD/Luminex, qPCR, Western blot and immunohistochemistry
* Maintain detailed documentation of experimental procedures in electronic lab notebook (ELN)
* Development and characterization of different mouse models for oncology with CROs/external collaborations
* Communicate data and strategies effectively to key stakeholders, including internal team members and external partners

Qualifications

* PhD degree (cancer biology, biochemistry, immunology or related discipline) with a minimum of 2 years of relevant hands-on experience in discovery or translational biology with oncology focus
* Experience with primary immune cell assays and immunological read-outs
* Experience with in vitro functional assays, multi-parameter flow cytometry and cytokine analysis
* Experience with culture of primary human 3D organoids, PBMCs and/or co-culture system preferred
* Ability to design, develop and optimize assays with minimum supervision
* Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral/written communication skills with ability to thrive in a goal driven team environment.
* Ability to work in a collegial manner, a team player
* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in an inter disciplinary environment, with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
* Focused and goal-oriented, flexible to adapt to fast challenges and opportunities
* This position will be based out of our South San Francisco office until February 1, 2022. Beginning in February, the position will be located in our new lab facility located in Palo Alto.
