We are seeking a Laboratory Technician I who will work under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, and in their absence under the direction of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), to provide technical, clerical and patient care support services. The Laboratory Technician will perform a variety of procedures including venipuncture, skin puncture, specimen collection, specimen processing and distribution and the operation and maintenance of automated instrumentation up to but not including the resulting of laboratory data. Service is provided to patients of all age groups: premature infants, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young, middle and older adults. Non-technical duties include taking of supply inventories, stocking supplies, cleaning and maintaining work area, equipment and instrumentation. The Laboratory Technician will provide service in a safe and professional manner and works within the established policies and procedures of the Laboratory and the Organization.

In this position you will:

* Prioritize all duties and adhere to established turnaround times for routine, urgent, STAT, timed and batched procedures for all duties assigned
* Perform venipuncture and skin puncture procedures for the purpose of blood specimen collection appropriate to the age and condition of the patient adhering to established procedure and protocol (Population: Neonate (0-1 mo.); Pediatric (2 mo. - 12 yr.); Adolescent (13-17 yrs.); Adult 18-65 yrs.); Geriatric (66 plus yr.). Maintains proper identification and integrity of the specimen. Transport the specimen to the laboratory and receives the specimen following information system requirements
* Process specimens by performing setups, centrifugation, separation and aliquoting procedures. Distribute specimens to the appropriate laboratory section. Resolve ordering and labeling discrepancies prior to specimen processing. Document, when appropriate, specimen condition and, under the direction of a CLS applies specimen rejection criteria
* Process incoming specimens for microbiology (bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, and parasitology) adhering to established procedure ensuring the accuracy of data and specimen integrity. Prepare smears, stains, and other procedures as assigned or requested by a CLS
* Maintain laboratory supplies and reagents for assigned department or as requested. Include taking inventories, filling out purchase requisitions, receiving supplies, stocking benches, rotating stock, and documenting activities
* Perform other duties as assigned within the scope, training and certification of the Laboratory Technician position
* Documentation and Information Management:
* Demonstrate a working knowledge of the hospital and laboratory information systems by performing responsible functions on these systems timely and accurately
* Perform clerical duties as assigned including but not limited to greeting and assisting patients and visitors to the laboratory; filing, printing, faxing and delivering reports; making, answering and transferring telephone calls. Perform these duties according to established policy and under the guidelines set forth in the organizations customer service programs

* Leadership and Supervision:
* Does not supervise other employees
* Solve problems within the context of assigned duties. Seek help when appropriate and to ensure continued quality service

* Development:
* Assume responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice
* Attend assigned staff development activities of the department and organization including required safety, fire and other educational programs
* Attend and participate in departmental staff meetings when such meetings coincide with scheduled hours

* Performance Improvement/Quality and Safety:
* Participate in assigned performance improvement activities including correcting identified deficiencies
* Actively support the facility with regards to continuous compliance with all regulatory and performance improvement standards including, but not limited to CAP, JCAHO, Department of Health Services, etc.

* Budgetary:
* Complete duties within acceptable time frames avoiding the unnecessary use of overtime or extended use of worked hours
* Perform duties utilizing resources and materials in a cost efficient manner avoiding waste

Required qualifications for this position includes:

* Education to meet certification, license or registration requirement
* California Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 Certificate

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

* Phlebotomy National Certification
* Three (3) months experience as a Laboratory Technician in a hospital based clinical laboratory
* Six (6) months experience as a phlebotomist
* Able to work flexible shifts
