Job description
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Under general supervision, supervises pool area and water to ensure proactive and expeditious accident prevention and response; responds to water-related accidents and emergencies; enforces compliance with state and local laws; maintains lifesaving and other related equipment and facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or auxiliary duties that may be required. - Lifeguard observes the water to monitor waders, swimmers, and other persons.
- Through communication and proactive safety contacts, averts potential accidents.
- Utilizes swimming, floatation and water lifesaving skills to perform water rescues.
- Provides first responder medical emergency response to water and other emergencies at the pool, including initial patient assessment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and trauma emergency care; prepares patients and assists paramedics in advanced life support emergency medical care.
- Provides general assistance, information and instruction to the public regarding water and other related public safety issues.
- Receives, responds to and/or resolves questions, assists with inquiries and complaints from the public; if warranted, refers requests and complaints to management.
- Provides guidance, warnings and announcements for the public's benefit and information.
- Administers basic first aid for minor injuries and follows proper emergency procedures during major emergencies.
- Enforces Pool rules including those related to animals, alcohol and public swimming issues as required by the State Health Department.
- Identifies problems and writes incident reports in accordance with applicable ordinances and departmental policies/procedures.
- Requests supervisor's assistance, guidance, intervention and approval as needed and provides clear, concise documentation and explanations to incident reports.
- Participates in educational courses and training in lifeguarding techniques and equipment, medical aid and a variety of other subjects related to lifeguarding.
- Studies and learns departmental operations and procedures.
- Handles sales and service at the front desk as needed.
- Monitors weight room area and has general knowledge of proper use of equipment.
- Teaches swim lessons as required.
- Cleans, services, maintains, and makes minor repairs to pool equipment, weight equipment and participates in the daily upkeep of facilities and grounds.
- Water environmental conditions.
- Water Rescue and First aid practices as taught by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
- Terminology and techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Terminology and techniques to perform as a lifeguard in first aid and rescue.
- Terminology and techniques to use lifeguard rescue equipment.
- Know department policies and enforce pool/facility rules.
- Observing and analyze public safety situations and determine appropriate course of action.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Interpret, apply and explain applicable pool and facility rules.
- Apply medical care at the basic life support level.
- Prepare and maintain clear, concise and accurate documentation.
- Utilize sound, independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Remain calm, make sound decisions and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
- Maintain personal physical endurance and agility.
- Basic computer skills needed to operate the front desk computer and register.
- Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, needed for reports, class registration and service.
- Strong customer service skills needed to interact with public. Must be able to work effectively with a wide variety of people and situations.
- Mechanical skills needed to perform routine pool maintenance.
- Basic math skills needed to reconcile cash from concessions.
- Basic knowledge of weight room equipment and exercise safety.
- Understand and apply city and departmental policies and procedures, and pertinent state and local regulations relating to lifeguard procedures and emergency operations.
- Think clearly, act quickly, and apply logic and common sense to problem solving.
- Develop and maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels.
- Entry level position
- Current High School student or High School diploma or equivalent
- American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent, CPR for Professionals, First Aid or equivalent.
- Training in:
- the operation of pool vacuum systems;
- swimming pool chemical testing;
- handling of chlorine and other pool chemicals.
- Ability to understand and apply city and departmental policies and procedures, and pertinent state and local regulations relating to lifeguard procedures and emergency operations.
- Ability to think clearly, act quickly, and apply logic and common sense to problem solving.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing, at the lifeguard level.
- Ability to walk, run, jump, climb, swim, drive, sit, lift and carry equipment up to 60 pounds, lift overhead and balance equipment up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in the sun or indoors in a humid environment for long periods of time.
