Job description

Location: Boulder, CO.

Position Term: This is a two-year term position.

Relocation: Relocation will be offered to non-local candidates.

Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa (e.g., J-1, H1-B, etc.) for this position.

Salary: $70,270

What You Will Do:

Conducts original research, following a plan developed primarily by the incumbent, in areas broadly related to NCAR strategic priorities, including Earth system science and actionable science, and documents that research in publications and presentations at professional meetings. Seeks to broaden their understanding of atmospheric science and other research areas at NCAR by collaborating with scientists and other postdoctoral researchers at NCAR. Contributes to the Advanced Study Program community through service and outreach.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Conducts independent or collaborative research leading to results worthy of publication in scientific journals.
  • Documents the results of the research, preferably in journal publications, and publicizes those results in seminars and conference presentations.
  • Learns about aspects of NCAR science outside the past experience of the Fellow by interacting and collaborating with other postdoctoral fellows and with the NCAR scientific staff.
  • Participates in and contributes to activities that advance the professional growth of the Fellows. These activities may include professional development workshops, contributing to NCAR/UCAR educational programs, serving on ASP and NCAR committees, attending workshops, or mentoring
  • Participates in seminars, research reports, and other organized scientific discussions by ASP and NCAR.
  • May participate in writing of grant proposals, and the review of scientific papers and proposals.


What You Will Need:

Education and Years of Experience:
  • Applicant must have a Ph.D. or Sc. D. degree granted in an area related to NCAR, or must be able to complete such a degree and finish all thesis revisions and defense before starting the NCAR appointment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrate a broad base of established and evolving knowledge within the Earth system sciences and detailed knowledge of the specific research area.
  • Ability to design sound research protocols, safely perform the techniques necessary to conduct and analyze this research, and navigate the scientific publishing processes.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
