Job description
Description: We are looking for a Principal Human Factors Engineer or Scientist to join Sonalysts multidisciplinary Human-Autonomy Interaction Laboratory (HAIL) team! You will work with a diverse team including other human factors engineers, UX designers, computer scientists, software engineers, data scientists, mathematicians, graphic artists, and numerous domain subject matter experts. The position is open to candidates that are both practice-oriented (Engineer) and research-oriented (Scientist), where the ideal candidate will be a blend of both. You will perform several Human Factors functions on a wide variety of national security and defense projects, including, but not limited to:
- Serving as technical lead for teams of HFEs on various projects.
- Conducting research, development, test, and evaluation on a variety of systems and technical domains, including, but not limited to:
- Human-AI/ML Interaction (Trust, Performance, etc.)
- Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- Sensemaking, Naturalistic Decision Making, and Reasoning Processes
- Crowdsourcing, Human Computation, and Collective Intelligence
- Design of Displays for Situation Awareness (Cyber, Space, Sea, Undersea, CBRNE, etc.)
- Interaction & Visualization of Multi-Modal Data (Text, Quantitative, Qualitative, Temporal, etc.)
- Wargaming and Human-Centered Decision Making Research
- Development of Novel Tools and Methods for HFE, UX, and Design Thinking
- Development and Evaluation of Advanced Training Technologies
- Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for funded R&D programs.
- Lead proposal writing efforts for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) opportunities.
- Develop novel concepts and execute internal research projects for the HAIL.
- Conduct business development with potential customers and collaborators (companies, laboratories, universities, etc.)
- Provide mentorship to more junior members of technical staff.
- Advocate for human-centered design practices with other software and operations research teams.
- Write and publish peer-reviewed research.
- Masters Degree in Human Factors, Applied/Experimental Psychology, I/O Psychology, Cognitive Science, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science (with an emphasis on User Interfaces or Human Computer Interaction), or other related field.
- 12+ Years of experience in human factors, usability, and/or the research, development, test, and evaluation of complex human-machine systems.
- Demonstrable experience in technical leadership, as evidence by either of the following:
- Experience leading teams of engineers and scientists,
- Experience as the Principal Investigator for externally-funded research (e.g. SBIR, BAA, or other grant).
- Must be a U.S. Citizen, eligible for a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Top Secret security clearance.
- PhD in any of the required fields.
- Strong technical writing skills, demonstrated by:
- Experience and success in proposal writing.
- Track record of refereed publications in journals and conferences.
- U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Active security clearance.
- Experience developing wireframes/mockups (Balsamiq is preferred).
- Significant experience in quantitative methods and statistical packages (e.g. SPSS, Python, R, or MATLAB).
- Significant experience in qualitative methods (e.g. focus groups, interviews, observational research).
- Experience working in Intelligence Analysis, or with Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) technologies and platforms.
- Experience in Human-AI/ML interaction, or experience working on AI/ML systems.
