The Chief Financial Officer position is accountable for the administrative, financial, and risk management operations of the business unit, to include the development of a financial and operational strategy , metrics tied to that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results.

As a key member of the business unit leadership team, this position provides strategic direction and is responsible for the development and sponsorship of long-term financial objectives for the business unit and alignment to UnitedHealthcare (UHC) goals and deliverables. This role ensures engagement of the business portfolios to support UHC's financial objectives and accurately monitors and reports progress to the executive team. This role is responsible for appraising business segment operating results in terms of cost, budget, standard operating procedures, trends and increased profit possibilities. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works with the business unit CEO, brings financial and strategic thinking and solutions, driving the organizations short-term and long-term goals and objectives
  • Directs and coordinates the fiscal year planning process in order to establish annual and long range budgets and forecasts
  • Responsible for the overall revenue, operating income and SG&A aspects of the business to ensure established financial targets are achieved
  • Engages with non-US regulators on reporting and other disclosure matters including, but not limited to, Solvency II
  • Partners on actuarial analysis and services in support of medical analysis, trend projections and rate negotiations
  • Ensures products are priced consistent with financial and business objectives. Balances growth and profitability goals to maximum results
  • Ensures data integrity and ongoing refinement of financial analytic systems and practices to support strategic decision-making
  • Assesses financial performance and issues periodic performance reports to relevant stakeholders including the Executive Team, Business Segment Leadership and Corporate Finance leaders
  • Delivers specific recommendations on financial improvement programs resulting in cost reduction and profit improvement
  • Provides financial leadership, expertise and support through due diligence and financial integration of current and future acquisitions
  • Sponsors programs and process improvements to continually enhance the precision of financial forecasting and estimation
  • Drives strategic decision making through an in-depth understanding of industry trends, market dynamics and internal key indicators. Drives operational improvement, business risk management and business development ideas across functional areas
  • Responsible for ensuring proper staffing, training, performance management and career development to support all direct functional responsibilities
  • Simultaneously supports businesses in various stages of maturity, including non-integrated, start-up and turnaround
  • In conjunction with market leaders, develops and implements monthly financial reporting of key business initiatives in multiple markets including, South America, Europe and the United States.
  • Provides ongoing financial analysis of development and operational results against the budget
  • Develops and implements controls to support these goals/objectives as needed
  • Develops systems for key financial and operating initiatives, as needed, as business growth occurs and matures
  • Member of the Global Solutions senior leadership team
  • Provides comprehensive balanced advice on finance policies
  • Frequently interacts with senior leaders, inside and outside the organization, to influence those leaders to adopt new ideas, products, and/or approaches
  • Manages and thoroughly monitors strategic projects that have an impact inside and outside of finance
  • Entrepreneurial approach to developing innovative solutions to meet customer/business needs

Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting or related field
  • 10+ year's experience in the insurance industry, specifically in a finance role
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • 4+ years of Global/International Finance experience AND/OR 4+ years of healthcare finance experience
  • Exceptional finance acumen and P&L management skills
  • 5+ years of advanced knowledge of the healthcare industry
  • Comfortable operating in business with various levels of maturity, including manual financial operations
  • Experience reporting to Executive Leadership in a strategic partnership capacity
  • Ability to complete complex projects and influence change in complicated, fast paced, matrix environment
  • Strong working knowledge of financial systems, statements and reports
  • Demonstrated success partnering with, leading and influencing multiple teams responsible for complex operations
  • Ability to influence multiple stakeholders at executive levels
  • Ability to drive strategy and growth decisions using strong insights into business and customers
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions providing a deep dive into a broad range of business decisions and operations
  • Capability to deliver analytics and insights that support strategy and decision making
  • A willingness to learn, take on new opportunities and lead teams effectively through change
  • Skill in providing meaningful context around financial and business performance to internal and external stakeholder groups
  • A proven track record of excellent personal and team performance, including in high pressure/high risk situations

Connecticut Residents Only: The salary range for Connecticut residents is $169,500 to $322,500. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
