Job description
- This is a hybrid position with primarily remote work but occasional on-site days.
- Job Summary
- Applying human factors to healthcare reduces medical errors and allows clinicians to deliver better care to their patients. We conduct rigorous research and apply scientifically-grounded principles to study and improve the interrelationship between providers, the equipment and processes they use, and the environment in which they work-with the patient as a central focus. The research team at the National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare leverages theory to conduct applied research that addresses critical safety problems and contributes to the generation and dissemination of knowledge in the healthcare industry. We are seeking someone who is highly motivated, energetic, and results driven. The successful candidate will support and lead healthcare human factors research. This role requires working at the intersection of many disciplines, on a variety of projects and with multiple partners. Curiosity to delve into new domains, the ability to learn from cross- functional, often highly technical partners and quick thinking are key. Responsibilities include designing and executing research studies and projects; providing oversight, direction, technical guidance, and support to interdisciplinary teams; and serving as a technically proficient subject matter expert and leader in human factors engineering responsible for human factors design process, principles, analysis, and usability testing methods.

- Education/Training
- Master's Degree required.
- Experience
- 3 years related experience with progressive responsibility in research, pure research, research and development management, research methodology, or behavioral therapeutic testing;
- License/Certification/Registration
- No special certification, registration or licensure required.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Statistical analysis and problem solving skills. Understanding of medical terminology. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in core research methods including interview techniques; survey design, development, and deployment; usability testing; and ability to collect, synthesize, and communicate complex data with broad cross-functional teams. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, statistical analysis, and problem solving skills. Understanding of medical terminology.

- Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Attends and assists at weekly didactic conferences.
- Collaborates in writing and preparing papers for presentation or publication. Helps compile information and statistics for projects. Works with editor to prepare final documentation. Presents research studies in abstract format at national and international meetings with subsequent publication of results in peer reviewed journals.
- Creates and implements research and educational course protocols, questionnaires, record keeping procedures, and testing and evaluation procedures for research and lab.
- Keeps current in new research developments, budgetary, regulatory, and personnel changes, and other information needed to respond to job requirements.
- Oversees and organizes the transfer of data with data key for statistical analysis and manuscript preparation. Transfers research data to analysis or computer records to ensure that bias is not introduced. Collects and analyzes results of studies and interprets results.
- Works with clinical patients as needed.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
