Essential Functions:

The VP of Finance, Controller position is charged with leading all aspects of the financial operations for ACP, including but not limited to -setting strategy, overseeing all financial reporting, analysis, scenario analysis, budgeting, and forecasting. The incumbent needs to be a thought leader experienced in moving beyond the numbers to translate results in to clear, relevant and actionable messaging; as well as, ensuring accurate, timely GAAP compliant accounting. Oversight also includes the management of cash and investments including serving as lead on banking relationships and co-lead on investment advisor relationships.

The incumbent must work as a partner with other teams to support The Association goals of top-notch member service and impactful advocacy. The incumbent will be as a key stakeholder and subject matter expert on cross-organizational teams. As such, the incumbent must be able to balance a controls mindset with a customer service orientation while bringing forward proactive solutions.


This role is responsible for all the above functions not just for The Association but also for affiliated organizations.


This person needs to be an experienced, outstanding manager / leader / developer of people as this role directly supervises and coaches a high performing team of four employees.

This position reports directly to the Chief Operations Officer and will work closely with the Executive Team. This role interacts with staff (at all levels), the Board Finance Committees, the Board and The Association Members, and several outside vendors.


Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.

  • Setting Financial Strategy
  • Proven ability to translate numbers (to multiple audiences) highlighting the most relevant points in a clear and actionable manner.
  • Experienced thought leader with a proven solutions mindset.
  • Assist the COO in financial modeling/scenario planning + identifying the drivers and underlying assumptions of each.
  • Manages financial operations, records, and controls.
  • Analyzes financial systems and procedures for maximum effectiveness.
  • Leads all aspects of managing and developing a team of direct reports
  • Lead Annual Budget Process and Financial Updates (monthly and quarterly).
  • Responsible for GAAP accounting and reporting oversight.
  • Supervises financial reporting, payroll management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets accounting, and investments accounting.
  • Ensures timely accounting close activities each month and ensures reconciliations to source data are accurate and efficient.
  • Generates and analyzes financial statements and prepares related commentary.
  • Coordinates audit activities, maintaining proper internal controls.
  • Serves as a co-staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board, attends meetings of Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate tax accounting, payments, and reporting, including state sales tax, payroll taxes, and unrelated business income tax.
  • Coordinates with audit firm to prepare annual 990 filing to the IRS.
  • Responsible for cash management including bank reconciliation, payment processing (lockbox, PayPal, etc.) and investment accounts.
  • Responsible for cashflow forecasts to ensure working capital needs are met and reserves are adequate.
  • Document, roll-out, and coordinate annual budget preparation process. Develop process in conjunction with CFO, communicate to peers across The Association, and update procedures. Oversee process including timeline management, progress monitoring, issues facilitation, and status reporting. Publishes approved annual budget.
  • Compile monthly financial forecasts by expense category and program, analyze budget-to-actual variances, and develop and provide relevant reports back to budget owners to help them understand trends and available funds.
  • As applicable, handles federal grants accounting, including reporting of grant spending and working with the upstream business owner to track related spending and ensure timely status reporting and reimbursement.
  • Develops and implements reports to analyze program profitability, working closely with the managers of those programs to determine what information would be most valuable.
  • Provides finance department leadership on projects.
  • Holds primary responsibility for maintaining the Association's accounting systems.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is required.
  • Five+ years' experience in similar, finance lead, position or equivalent combined experience.
  • Proven analytical skills - Ability to "develop and tell the financial story" to varying audiences.
  • Strong manager of people experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a high functioning team.
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP, tax, and financial reporting standards and deadlines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal / relationship building skills.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner to successfully balance regulatory requirements with customer goals.
  • Ability to meet deadlines; organize, manage time and prioritize workload.
  • Microsoft office suite, accounting software experience.
