Your Opportunity
We are looking for a field biologist/environmental scientist to conduct a variety of environmental field surveys for our clients in the public and private sectors. The selected candidate will assist our team of environmental professionals with the delineation and assessment of upland and wetland habitats, wildlife surveys, and other data collection and analysis in support of projects in Florida and across the Gulf Coast.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Conduct jurisdictional wetland delineations and wetland functional assessments in accordance with applicable agency regulations
- Conduct vegetation inventories and monitoring
- Conduct wildlife surveys and habitat assessments for listed species
- Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze ecological/environmental data
- Prepare report documentation and supporting materials for client and regulatory agency submittals
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Demonstrated field experience and skills in an applicable science/discipline (e.g., botany, ornithology, herpetology, soil science, wetland science).
- Strong field botany and plant taxonomy skills are a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Superb field observation skills and strong attention to detail.
- A positive attitude in all working conditions.
- Strong computer and technology skills (e.g., Microsoft Office; database software). Experience with GPS and digital field collection equipment is a plus.
- Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work in rural wilderness settings.
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and the promotion of safe behaviors.
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training preferred.
- Must have a good driving record and valid driver's license.
- Experience operating field vehicles (e.g., 4-wheel drive trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and/or boats) is a plus
- Shallow-water snorkeling and SCUBA experience is a plus
- Willingness to travel and conduct field work in remote areas for extended periods (up to 20% of the time), including overnight travel, is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
Education and Experience
The ideal candidate will have at minimum, a bachelor's degree in an environmental discipline (Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Soil Science or related natural resources field). One to three years of experience conducting applied environmental field surveys is desired. Experience with Trimble hand-held GPS units or other similar GPS-based survey and digital data collection equipment (e.g., field tablets, data loggers) is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Working outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions
- Walking distances up to 10 miles per day over rough and/or heavily vegetated terrain
- Standing for long periods of time
- Lifting up to 50 pounds
- Carrying up to a 20-pound backpack up to 8 hours per day
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, or crouching
- Climbing, crossing fences, balancing, walking/wading in shallow water
- Wearing common protective or safety equipment (PPE)
- Working with handheld data collection equipment
- Driving
- Office work with computers
