Job description
We're seeking an experienced leader to join our team in the critical role of controller. The ideal candidate will have solid communication, technology, analytical, and managerial skills, as well as possess knowledge of all aspects of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The controller should also understand U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations and provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
Initial duties will have a broad scope as we build out our team and grow business. The candidate must be a problem-solver who can roll up their sleeves and deliver results; a motivated self-starter who can run with their own projects and work as a team; detail-oriented, organized, and thorough, with a desire for continuous improvement; knowledgeable about complex accounting principles; armed with good interpersonal skills; able to handle confidential and sensitive information with the appropriate level of discretion; well equipped with organizational skills needed to manage time, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple deadlines. The Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting functions
- Managing all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of business results
- Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements
- Coordinating and managing external audit
- Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
- Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes
- Evaluating accounting and internal control systems
- Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, and recommending improvements
- Managing treasury functions
- Evaluating and implementing new software (e.g., travel & expense management)
- Overseeing regulatory reporting, including tax planning and compliance
- Hiring, training, and retaining skilled accounting staff
Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or related field
- CPA required
- In-depth knowledge of US GAAP
- 10+ years proven accounting experience
- Strong understanding banking and treasury functions
- 5+ years' experience as a senior-level accounting manager
- Strong working knowledge of detailed financial analysis
- Proven payroll experience, with a focus on streamlining accounting processes
- History of financial project management, including implementations
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local tax compliance regulations and reporting
- Previous experience in public accounting is highly valued
