Manages all aspects of the vivarium and other animal facilities including daily operations, ensuring the highest standards of animal care. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory and oversight agencies. Assists researchers with the development of protocols, training researchers and ensuring strict adherence to all aspects of approved Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols conducted in the facilities. Oversees assigned staff and student workers. Oversees the vivarium and other animal facilities' equipment and physical assets. Provides leadership to grow the vivarium's usage and research portfolio.
Responsibilities
1. Oversees daily operations of vivarium and other animal facilities including animal care, husbandry, routine procedures to maintain the health and integrity of animals
2. Maintains daily logs, procurement of animals and supplies, preparation of per diem invoices
3. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment, proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste, and development of standard operating procedures
4. Responsible for the supervision, performance management and scheduling of assigned staff and/or students
5. Develops a growth strategy and spearheads business development for the facility
6. Maintains accurate records and inventories related to per diem billing, inventories of supplies, chemicals, controlled substances, and equipment maintenance
7. Maintains accurate records and inventories related to procurement, receipt, and assignment of animals
8. Supports researchers with the writing and development of research plans and IACUC protocols to ensure that pertinent regulations are followed
9. Communicates regularly with researchers to assess current and future research needs, and assists as needed
10. Trains faculty and student researchers (e.g., research techniques, veterinary procedures), maintains training records for investigators who work with animals in the vivarium and other CSM animal facilities
11. Ensures that all animal facilities' activities comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, guidelines, and regulations (e.g., AAALAC, the National Institute of Health's Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, US Department of Agriculture)
12. Participates in regulatory inspections, and prepares and submits regulatory documents and reports as required
13. Oversees access to vivarium and other CSM animal facilities via ensuring that all personnel are compliant with Occupational Health requirements, Environmental Health and Safety requirements, and are properly trained for inclusion in IACUC Protocols
14. In consultation with the Attending Veterinarian, ensures laboratory maintenance testing, disease surveillance, and preventive medicine programs are executed for various laboratory animal species, including, but not limited to mice, rats, and gerbils
15. Performs post-approval monitoring and reports findings to IACUC
16. Serves as subject matter expert on animal models with the responsibility to alert leadership, Institutional Official, Compliance Office, and IACUC of any regulatory or other governing body policy changes that impact animal research
17. Participates in preparing the University's application for AAALAC accreditation in collaboration with the IACUC and Research Compliance Office
18. Serves as the vivarium and department liaison with the University Institutional Officer, Compliance Officer, Attending Veterinarian, and Chair and membership of IACUC, keeping them apprised of the state of the vivarium and other CSM animal facilities
19. Serves on the IACUC
20. Considered University Essential Personnel, responsible for oversight of the facility during emergencies that may occur during business and non-business hours

Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Animal Science, or other related fields closely allied with laboratory animal research.
Other Required Qualifications
AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level, or equivalent experience.
Required Experience
Three (3) years of experience working with laboratory animals including daily operations, personnel supervision, and financial management.
