General Summary
Gas Technology Institute (GTI), the nation's leading research and development and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for a motivated person at the Associate Scientist or Scientist level to work in GTI's microbiology sciences group. This position will provide microbiology support to on-going research programs at GTI. Primary Responsibilities
- Routinely perform molecular analysis including: nucleic acid extraction, quantification and purification of DNA, functional gene amplification with PCR and qPCR
- Conduct laboratory testing/experimentation in the areas of environmental microbiology, biocorrosion, anaerobic digestion, microalgae technologies with focus on energy industries
- Data entry and analysis, including possibly phylogenetic analysis, univariate and multivariate statistics, and bioinformatics
- Participate and facilitate on-going collaboration with PI and research team to conceptualize the methods portion of proposals, develop new research plans, and process data
- Assist with conceptualizing research ideas and develop proposals on relevant project areas for energy industries
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
- Hands-on experience with molecular methods such as DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR/PCR methodologies, metagenomics, and microbial community analysis
- Strong experimental and analytical skills in environmental microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry with focus on renewable energy production and biocorrosion
- Ability to effectively communicate (written/verbal) with internal and external personnel
- Ability to plan experiments and analyze / present data clearly
- Excellent attention to detail, ability to follow directions, and work well independently or in a group
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a cross-functional format
- Motivated to learn new techniques
- Adaptive and flexible to succeed in a changing environment
Education and Experience
- B.S. or M.S with 0-2 years of academic or industrial lab experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or relevant disciplines
