OVERVIEW:

The Curator for Natural Science at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is responsible for participating in the development, management, research, accession, utilization and presentation of the museum's science collection (geology, zoology and botany). The incumbent, in concert with colleagues, curates designated specimens, as well as oversees the utilization, rotation and care of the science collection pieces incorporated into the museum exhibitions, programs and experiences.

REPORTS TO: Lead Paleontologist & Manager of Natural Science Collections

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works to maximize the use and visibility of the collection. Works closely with staff colleagues across the museum to plan, prepare and install science collection object-based exhibits. Coordinates displays and exhibits. Works with staff members to provide objects and relevant documentation in a timely manner.
  • Completes the processing of Science artifacts and specimens into the museum's permanent collection, including object designation, paperwork for acquisition (federal, state and museum),, handling, cataloging, storage, retrieval, digitization and recording of documentation into collections management computer database. Works with collection management on deaccessioning of pieces.
  • Assists with identifying and acquiring or borrowing appropriate objects for the museum's science collection. Serves as curator and provides content expertise for project/program planning teams to accurately and appropriately utilize artifacts via digital and gallery programs and temporary, permanent and traveling exhibits, and virtual use of the collection.
  • Works closely with collections management and conservation staff to facilitate collections care, safety and documentation; works to repair and upgrade specimen conditions and documentation. Keeps all necessary paperwork up to date for natural science specimens (ex. Fish and Wildlife).
  • Provides artifacts and specimens for gallery interpretation and programs.
  • Facilitates access to the science collection through provision of specimens for both in-house temporary and permanent exhibits and for traveling exhibits, programs, presentations, internal and external loans, research and collections tours.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, evaluates and mentors interns and volunteers working with science collection in collaboration with the intern coordinator and volunteer center.
  • Presents collections materials through public and professional presentations, tours, workshops and programs.
  • Participates in museum-led paleontology excavations working closely with other natural science and paleontology staff on field acquisition, planning, purchasing, logistics, and site data collection
  • Participates in fossil preparation in paleontology labs by transporting, preparing, molding and casting specimens. Assists the Lead Paleontologist in teaching prep skills to staff and volunteers. Presents to and educates visitors of all ages about paleontology lab prep at the public windows on a regular basis.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, geology, archaeology, anthropology, museum studies, or related field. A Master's degree with some museum experience is preferred.
  • Three (3) years' experience working with natural science collections, with history of increased responsibility.
  • Experience with paper work involved in the acquisition and housing of natural science specimens, especially zoological specimens (ex. CITES, fish and wildlife, etc.).
  • Experience in artifact handling, cataloging, and condition reporting. Experience with preparing natural science specimens for collections is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience in public presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and with the public.
  • Advanced research skills for the development of text for exhibits, catalogues, publications, and programs, as well as for the identification of potential acquisitions.
  • Proficient computer skills, including word processing and database programs. Experience with surface scanning, photogrammetry or other 3D digitization tools preferred.
  • Proven experience in working productively and creatively in an educationally oriented museum focused on children and families.
  • Appreciation for and tolerance of other cultures.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to view a computer monitor, read printed documents, visually examine artifacts and prepare them for exhibition.
  • Must be able to communicate via telephone, one-on-one conversations and public presentations.
  • Ability to utilize a keyboard; must possess dexterity for exhibit installation, modification and artifact manipulation.
  • Must be able to kneel, sit or stand for extended periods of time and traverse the campus and designated dig site. Must be able to lift op to approximately 50 pounds, climb and bend to facilitate programs.
