Department Information

The IU School of Medicine Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences is soliciting interest in a Laboratory Research Assistant level position with a focus on preclinical drug and cellular therapy delivery, nanotechnology and advanced in vivo imaging in small animals, including BLI, MRI, PET and PET/MRI.

Job Summary

Fundamental Responsibilities:

  • Conduct tests across a diverse array of assays using laboratory machinery and computer programs.
  • Tests and sets up lab equipment.
  • Collects data and prepares reports based upon established protocols.
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings.
  • Orders, receives, and inventories laboratory supplies.
  • Cleans glassware and maintains laboratory work areas.
  • Troubleshoots breakdowns, performs preventive maintenance, and calls for repairs as needed.
  • Maintains logs and equipment record books.

Qualifications

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting OR
  • Associate's degree and 4 years of experience in a laboratory setting

Preferred
  • Nanotechnology
    • Working understanding of the chemistry involved with nanotechnology as it pertains to drug delivery, for instance with nanoparticles and nanoemulsions.
    • Can characterize drugs and nanoparticles (dynamic light scattering, mass spectroscopy and electron microscopy, High performance liquid chromatography, UV Vis spectroscopy).
  • Chemistry
    • Can work with small molecules, including peptides and immunomodulators, which will be compared against multi-drug therapies with nanoparticles/nanoemulsions.
    • Able to develop penetration enhancers and develop targeting compounds, critical for drug delivery to the target site.
  • Cell culture
    • Development of therapies require testing in vitro prior to testing in animals.
    • The lab manager will have experience in various cell prep and maintenance techniques, which includes growing tumor, neuronal and immunological cell lines.
    • Experience with in vitro drug testing which includes cytotoxicity and viability testing with a fluorimeter.
    • Flow cytometry for cell membrane protein expression, western blotting, RT PCR and gel electrophoresis
  • Animal Care
    • Basic animal care, including maintaining a colony of immunodeficient rodents.
    • Ability to work with radiolabeled ligands for in vivo positron emission tomography.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
