Job description
Description
The Department of Animal Sciences announces a tenure-track
faculty position (academic year) in Animal Breeding and Genomics
with emphasis in research (primary) and teaching (secondary).
The successful candidate will develop a nationally and
internationally recognized program that elucidates and applies
quantitative genetics and genomics methods to improve relevant
traits in livestock and/or poultry. Areas of expertise should
include, but are not limited to, applied, theoretical, and
computational approaches to animal breeding, genomic selection,
population genetics, mixed model methodology, and livestock data
science. The successful candidate will use quantitative genetic and
genomic methods to improve the understanding of biological
mechanisms underlying phenotypic variability in livestock
productive efficiency, animal product quality, reproductive
performance, animal health and well-being, and environmental
efficiency, enabling optimal implementation of livestock genetic
improvement programs through interaction with the public and
private sectors.
Graduate student advising and training in
quantitative genomics and animal breeding is expected. Furthermore,
collaborative research activities that address foundational or
emerging issues in the integration of multi-omic datasets and
large-scale high-throughput phenotypes for genetic improvement
purposes and data analytics of sensor-based technologies is
strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to
teach an undergraduate course in Animal Breeding and Genetics, and
develop a graduate course in the areas of Animal Breeding and
Genetics, Population Genetics, or Statistical Genomics. The
successful candidate will also mentor undergraduate students
through undergraduate research projects, club activities, and
career advising.
The Department and College
The Department of Animal Sciences has state of-the-art research
infrastructure and classroom space in the new Creighton Hall of
Animal Sciences and Land O? Lakes Center for Experiential Learning.
Excellent core facilities are available on campus, including
genomics, bioinformatics, proteomics, and metabolite profiling
centers, which are supported by high performance computing
capacity. Animal Sciences is an integral part of the College of
Agriculture, one of the world's leading colleges of agricultural,
food, life, and natural resource sciences and ranked seventh in the
US in the 2021 QS World University Rankings. The College is deeply
committed to the three land-grant missions (teaching, research, and
extension), to international activities and perspectives that span
all missions, and to excellence in all we do.
The College has
11 academic departments and includes 285 faculty, 2791
undergraduate students, and 769 graduate students. The College's
current strategic plan can be accessed at
