POSITION OVERVIEW
The Animal Care Technician is responsible for assisting the group with maintaining the well-being of animals in accordance with all SOPs, applicable state and federal regulations, as well as guidelines set forth by the veterinarian and veterinary delegates.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use simple laboratory equipment/apparatus under supervision.
- Maintain written records in laboratory notebooks, laboratory forms, or log book.
- Handle rats and mice used for laboratory experiments.
- Maintain rat/mouse colony.
- Clean and sanitize caging, equipment, rooms, and support areas.
- Dismantle, clean and assemble laboratory apparatus and equipment.
- Attentively test sanitized items for cleanliness using testing equipment.
- Maintain good housekeeping in work areas.
- Maintain an adequate supply of stock items related to husbandry.
- Perform functions as assigned by supervisor.
- Participate in in-house training programs for the technical staff
- Interact with visiting clients, inspectors, other visitors/visiting employees, and representatives of the community in a professional manner.

- Perform other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
- High School Diploma. A suitable combination of education and experience.
- Equivalent combination of related education and required work experience will be considered with management approval.
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
- Ability to read, write and understand oral and/or written instructions
- Able to read and interpret identifications, groups, and color codes
- Effective organizational, written and oral communication skills
- The ability to multi-task and work independently in a matrixed team organization under tight timelines
- Recognition of the importance of following all required safety procedures including the use of PPE, proper chemical storage and disposal.
- Ability to use a computer to compile data, maintain database/spreadsheet records and inventory utilizing the appropriate software.
- Ability to learn the operation laboratory instruments and tools, under supervision.
- Record data clearly and accurately.
- Exhibit a quality approach to work, possess an eye for detail, and demonstrate the ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
- Possess a knowledge and understanding of appropriate regulations and demonstrate the ability to apply these practices daily.
- Possess a favorable attitude and disposition with a sense of urgency.
- Available to work weekends, holiday and extended hours during the work week as assigned.
- Perform various routine techniques including animal identification, clinical observations, restraint.
Physical Activity
- Moderate-high physical activity This position will require frequent walking, sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, carrying, heavy lifting (max. 50 lbs), reaching while standing, gripping and twisting hand movements, finger control and other general repetitive motions (for more than four [4] hours per day).
- Ability to learn simple techniques employed in the laboratory.
- Ability to handle laboratory instruments and tools, under supervision.
- Ability to learn to operate equipment as required.
- Adhere to all pertinent safety regulations and operating procedures.
Working Conditions
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior office or laboratory environment
- Able to wear latex or nitrile gloves, dust mask or respirator, boots and safety glasses as required.
- Manual dexterity to operate laboratory equipment and calculator/computer.
- Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include use of protective equipment.
- The noise level is usually low to moderate; require hearing protection.
- Infrequent involvement with, irritants, hazardous chemicals, flammable materials and bio-hazards.
- Potential exposure to hazardous biological materials.
- Frequent involvement in high humidity or wet conditions
