Job Summary

The Laboratory Scientist, Certified will be responsible for performing laboratory testing in a fast-paced academic medical center. The Laboratory provides services to all aspects of the Level I trauma center and throughout the healthcare enterprise, including KY Children's Hospital, and Markey Cancer Center.

This position is responsible for the testing and maintenance of high complexity laboratory tests performed in the Cytogenetics Laboratory with a focus on chromosome and Fluorescent InSitu Hybridization (FISH) analysis. Additionally, this position will be required to troubleshoot and maintain instrumentation, provide guidance with design and implementation of experiments, and assist with additional projects as needed.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to protect patient, employee, and visitor safety, UK HealthCare is requiring all employees to comply with the COVID-19 vaccination policy prior to starting employment. Therefore, as of September 15, 2021, UK HealthCare requires all employees, including new hires prior to their first day of employment, to submit appropriate documentation showing, i) completion of the first vaccination against COVID-19, or ii) completion of the full vaccination series against COVID-19 (i.e., two weeks past completing their complete COVID-19 vaccination series), or iii) approved exemption (medical contraindications or a sincerely held religious belief) through the formal vaccine exemption process from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement. For those employees who have completed the first vaccination against COVID-19 prior to their first day of employment, the second vaccination (if applicable) must be completed following the vaccination recommended schedule to be considered fully vaccinated.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Quick learner, show initiative, ability to follow established procedures, and multi-task. Communication skills and ability to work closely with colleagues and senior leadership in a close lab setting. Experience with light microscopy, florescent microscopy, and tissue cultures is preferred.

Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? No Preferred Education/Experience

BS with CG ASCP certification with 1 year of Cytogenetics experience
