Description

The Laboratory Assistant will assist with samples related to blood lead levels, recreational water, and testing for infectious disease. This position will also be responsible for the following:

* Time/date stamping and verifying information on blood, urine and other patient samples and paperwork submitted to the lab.
* Disinfecting and sterilizing equipment used in lab testing.
* Managing lab supply inventory and filling lab supply orders for clients.
* Managing the lab biohazardous waste for disposal.
* Preparing specimens for shipment to the KY Division of Laboratory Services in Frankfort, KY.
* Assisting lab technologists with paperwork
* ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Assists laboratory personnel with routine lab tasks such as cleaning, sterilizing and storing equipment

Inventories, orders and stocks medical supplies and materials Examples of Duties

UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION

Maintains sanitary conditions in the medical laboratory unit

Cleans laboratory equipment such as glassware and instruments using solvents, brushes and rags

Prepares cleaning solutions

Sterilizes media and broth reagents for various laboratory functions

Stores glassware in proper place after the sterilization process

Records and reports number and date of samples upon arrival

Inventories, orders and stocks medical supplies and materials

Performs related work

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or the equivalent

WORK EXPERIENCE

Six months of laboratory experience

EQUIVALENCY

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Must wear personal protective equipment as mandated by OSHA

Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
