Position Summary:
The Laboratory Technician II, reports to Supervisor, Lead Laboratory Technician, or Technologist-in-charge. Primary duty of collecting specimens/ performing phlebotomy for most in this role. Performs laboratory tests/ waived laboratory tests (which may include but not limited to: Occult and Gastric Blood tests, Urine PH and Urine volume determination). Processing samples which may include accessioning, receiving, aliquoting, and labeling samples; as well as participating in review of laboratory activities. May operate and maintain automated pre-analytical instrumentation. Accurately records and reports results. Maintains established levels of supplies and inventory and insures clean and organized workspace/carts. Responsible for initiating or verifying that proper actions are taken to resolve problems. Reviews lab requisitions for accuracy and collects pertinent clinical and insurance information. May be responsible for entry of patient and laboratory information into assigned systems. May perform data entry, processing of specimens, both for in-house and referrals; billing functions, and all pre-analytic set ups (may be required to process lab payments). Participates in Quality Assurance initiatives. Provides feedback to leadership regarding laboratory processes and participates in Process Improvement Initiatives. Phlebotomy and Arterial Blood collection are required skills. Maintains high level of competency for all skills and knowledge required. Participates in training new employees and in auditing laboratory workflows and performance. Exceptional customer service; communicating with patients, medical providers, and laboratory & hospital staff in clear, concise, and compassionate manner.
Education:
Requires: High school diploma or equivalent including high school level course work in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Completion of accredited laboratory or phlebotomy courses, highly desired.
Licensure/Certification:
No certification required. (Required certification from a department approved agency, if that is counted towards experience equivalency below.)
Required Work Experience:
Two years (full-time) on-the-job or outside experience as Laboratory Technician, and successful demonstration of the required skills*.
OR
6 months minimum experience as a Laboratory Technician with a verified Phlebotomy Certification (completed accredited phlebotomy/medical assistant course and passed exam for ASCP, IAPT, IAPS, or other Department of Pathology recognized certification) may be considered in lieu of 2+ years' experience. With successful demonstration of the required skills* Certification must be kept active/verified if used in lieu of experience in LT2 position.
OR
6 months minimum experience as a Laboratory Technician with related Associates or Bachelor's degree in science or healthcare. With successful demonstration of the required skills*.
OR
Clinical Laboratory Science students enrolled in their final year of a 4 year accredited program may work as Clinical Laboratory Tech II/non-certified Phlebotomist and perform moderate complexity testing under the supervision of an experienced Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
Advancement to Lab Tech II is possible for current staff meeting one of the minimum eligibility requirements listed above while employed at JHH in Lab Tech/Phlebotomy positions. Employee must have no active discipline on file to be considered for advancement. Advancement processed following approval by management, submission of necessary documentation to Human Resources by supervisor, and completed verification of certification if applicable.
*For Phlebotomy (Adult and Pediatric) requires at least 100 blood draws and competency testing on relevant procedures, which may include testing on a mannequin arm. Phlebotomists require special training to draw blood cultures, work in biocontainment areas,
and perform venous blood gas collections. (Require additional training when assigned other specialty skills, example - bone marrow collection, Pediatrics, special instrumentation
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of laboratory techniques relating to qualitative and quantitative testing procedures and equipment maintenance.
Knowledge of Phlebotomy services and techniques. Demonstrates knowledge of medical terminology and medical/laboratory information systems.Ability to read, write and follow written procedures required in laboratory assignments. Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to maintain effective exchange of technical information with diverse groups. Ability to prioritize work to handle both STAT and routine specimens. Ability to demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail, sometimes under stressful conditions. Must perform consistently at a high level, verifying patient demographic data or testing information. Ability to troubleshoot and multitask responsibilities in a high throughput, high-volume testing environment. Must ensure subsequent procedures are performed accurately and safely. Demonstrates exceptional customer service and inter-personal skills; service excellence. Ability to responding to in-person and telephone inquiries. Must contribute to presenting a professional appearance and environment to customers and coworkers.
