Position: Finance Manager
Department: Ophthalmology
Schedule: Full Time
Under the general direction of the Administrative Director and in collaboration with the Chair and Vice-Chairs, the Finance Manager will support the overall financial performance of the department of Ophthalmology.
Human Resources
- Leads departmental support of faculty, including effort, salary, benefits, time off balances and use, and family and medical leaves.
- Manages the department's value-based physician compensation system, including annual settlement reconciliation.
- Provides faculty with data relevant to their own performance
- Oversees the day-to-day supervision of the department staff with finance responsibilities
Finance
- Manages department finances, including financial planning, accounting, budgeting and purchasing in accordance with established rules and procedures. Establishes and ensures appropriate internal controls are established and processes followed appropriately.
- Writes annual budget, monitors variances, researches trends, reconciles institutional support with Boston University Medical Group (BUMG) Finance team
- Oversees BUEA HR manager in activities related to tracking of all provider spending related to continuing medical education (CME) accounts for faculty. Oversees spending for special accounts, including research accounts, the department residency program, and the medical student education program
- Assists the Administrative Director with faculty compensation transactions. Manages transactions in SAP.
- Works with research staff to allocate faculty compensation funding sources.
- Oversees development of budgets for grant proposals in collaboration with investigators.
- Monitors grant budgets, in collaboration with PIs and Clinical Research Manager and Grant Administrators.
- Develops and maintains strong relationships the community health centers, Boston University, Boston Medical Center, and other partners.
- Performs analysis to support Annual Physician Reviews, including Physician P&Ls and comparison to Benchmarks
- Creates semi-annual physician P&Ls for incentive compensation
- Tracks all contracts and leases, including management of facility lease renewals, Neighborhood Health Center contracts and capital lease negotiations
- Responsible for AUPO Benchmark Data Collection (every 2 years)
Revenue Cycle/Accounts Receivable
- Performs monthly review of Accounts Receivable Aging, including granular analysis to Identify Risks/Opportunities, and presents observations/recommendations to Leadership
- Performs monthly review of problem accounts and open balances by category (Insurance, Clinic/OR/Drugs)
- Performs bad debt reserve tracking/analysis/projections
- Runs monthly and ad-hoc reports our of cubes and Epic to monitors all aspects of AR to identify areas of risk/opportunity
Business Development
- Generates timely and accurate reporting of clinical productivity for department's service units
- Maintains timely and accurate financial reporting at the service line level
- Supports the preparation of business plans to inform the strategic direction of the department
- Performs special financial analyses as required.
Other
- Serves as a member of the department's Compensation and Finance Committees
- Serve as the liaison to the BUMG for the documentation required for any audits.
- Supports internal communications efforts.
- Provides ongoing training and education, including cross training of staff
- Supports department meetings, retreats and other initiatives.
- Supports the onboarding and orienting of new faculty and staff.
- Performs other duties as needed.

EDUCATION:
Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Finance or related degree required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
CPA is a plus but not required
EXPERIENCE:
5 or more years' experience in an accounting environment, ideally in academia and/or medicine.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of GAAP in a non-profit organization.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative and handle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills needed to effectively interact with hospital staff, external donors, leaders and business customers.
- Superior computer experience on both General Ledger System (Infor preferred) as well as comparable spreadsheet and work processing software and be ability to train others.
- Work requires strong analytical skills and be able to apply GAAP in a non profit acute care environment.
- Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor staff and work effectively as a team member.
- Work requires a dedicated team player with the willingness and desire to learn and grow within the organization.
