The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan serves as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor of food on behalf of its Partner Agencies which are non-profit, charitable organizations serving those in need.

Today the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan provides over 25 million pounds of food each year to those in need through more than 415 partner agencies. Partner Agencies consist of local soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries who strive to feed the more than 300,000 people in eastern Michigan who are food insecure. The excellent relationships established within the Food Bank's 22 county service area and throughout the state has allowed for numerous programs and initiatives to help fight hunger.

Job Description

The Human Resources Manager is a resourceful leader with strong human resources knowledge and project management skills to provide assistance and support to the Director of Human Resources by managing all daily aspects of human resources, including employee life cycle, benefits programs, and compliance. The HR Manager will have the ability to establish strong working relationships across the organization with staff at all levels, and align with the organization's policies, practices, and culture to be able to represent the Food Bank to employees and other stakeholders.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead all employee on-boarding and new hire processes
  • Off-board employees, to include exit interviews, terminate benefits with insurance carriers, ensure final payment of wages, and generate all required notices
  • Process benefit enrollments including medical, dental, flexible spending account, life insurance, 40k retirement plan, and other related benefits
  • Administer FMLA and other leaves of absence requests in compliance with government regulations
  • Assist with performance evaluation process and ensure completion of all relevant documents
  • Assist with training for groups and individuals
  • Communicate and facilitate understanding of Food Bank personnel policies through handbooks, meetings, email messages, and other forms of communication
  • Handle employee relations issues, including discipline and complaint procedures, in conjunction with Director of Human Resources
  • Assist with organizing staff gatherings, including annual holiday parties and special internal events
  • Assist with the administration of Injury & Illness prevention programs, including quarterly safety committee meetings, accident investigations, mitigation processes, staff drills, and staff safety meetings
  • Manage Workers' Compensation claims, reporting, audits, and OSHA logs
  • Administer all aspects of driver pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screening, registration in the DMV pull list program, and driver medical certifications
  • Manage the Time & Attendance database and Payroll processing system along with maintaining data and documents for all human resources related activities and reports
  • Assist with maintaining and updating employee handbook
  • Maintain working knowledge of federal and state employment laws, wage and hour laws, as well as current human resources practices
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge and Education and Work Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or a related field or a combination of education and experience. PHR or SPHR certification a plus
  • 5-10 years of experience in a human resources or similar position with progressively increasing levels of responsibility
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience preferred
  • 3-5 years working experience in databases

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, regulations, and legal documents pertaining to human resources

  • Ability to work with details and accuracy as well as an appreciation for "big picture" issues
  • Ability to work and interact well with individuals (staff and volunteers) from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally diverse environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from employees, regulatory agencies or management
  • Good listening skills and an ability to exercise sound judgment when dealing with human resource matters

Working Conditions:

Work is typically performed in a normal office environment, working on computers, and assisting with special events that involve bending, lifting, seeing, and verbally communicating with other, with occasional exposure to warehouse conditions.
