The Role
We are seeking an experienced technical resource who will assume full line management responsibility for a group of highly technical, motivated and passionate individuals who are responsible for automating key tasks within the Lumen organization. The role exists within the Enterprise Tooling and Automation business unit which operates as part of Lumen's wider Transformation programme. The position holder will be required to oversee development of automated solutions across Lumen's Network and Platform environments, driving towards process and technical efficiencies as Lumen seeks to transform its operations. The automation efforts will require cross-functional working at both a process and technical level acknowledging the integration requirements with wider enterprise toolsets.
You will provide an excellent customer experience working with, and contributing to, our existing automation toolset implementing value-add activities driving efficiency and consistency. All automation and project work has to be accompanied by extensive supporting documentation, and you will be required to oversee all elements of DevOps delivery realizing value by removing waste to increase operational efficiency, demonstrable via metrics
The Main Responsibilities
- Assume full line management responsibility for a global team of DevOps engineers (14)
- Build automation roadmaps that when delivered, will remove waste and allow time savings to be returned to business
- Provide managerial guidance during the sprint cycles ensuring that development activities marry against Lumen's business priorities
- Manage the team's workload inline with Agile principles, delivering value via Sprints producing supporting management metrics to reinforce progress
- Build relationships with other DevOps teams and be responsible for a synchronized road map that will deliver operational value
- Foster and build relationships with key internal teams and departments to ensure any development efforts adhere to Lumen's established toolsets and standards
- To form close links with internal engineering teams and our vendors, analyzing the managed estate against established standards and proactively identifying updates that increase operational stability
- Deliver new and support existing automation, acting as a management escalation point for any issues that arise as a result of the teams' activities
- Where possible cross train and mentor the Global Operations Centre resources developing technical, procedural and soft skills coaching to increase the performance of the function
- 10+ years of combined experience supporting, maintaining and developing IT in a large-scale enterprise environment (preferably a managed services/cloud provider) with a minimum of 5 years working at a senior level
- 5+ years of management experience - including creating and managing deliverables, performance management combined with a proven track record of employee development
- 3+ years of experience with workflow automation solutions, data extraction/manipulation and interacting with systems programmatically
- Experience creating custom API's to sit in-front of in-house developed software solutions, along with experience automating activities against vendor API's or utilizing native methods of connectivity (eg. SSH)
- Prior experience building CI/CD environments to drive and deliver operational efficiencies
- A proven track record of taking manual activities and streamlining their implementation via automated techniques in a large-scale operational environment, executed in alignment with established Incident and Change Management processes - examples are mandatory
- Writing technical documentation: ability to describe processes and solutions accurately; ability to break down complex technical information into clear and concise instructions
- Excellent client facing skills and the ability to interact successfully at all levels
- Strong influencing and effective listening skills
- Prior experience managing/leading a team of DevOps engineers
- Full line management responsibility is a core requirement
- Delivery via Agile - including managing Sprint cycles via established road maps
- Experience in scripting preferably with experience of ONE or more of:
- Python
- Node.JS
- Powershell
- Experience of managing workflow automations leveraging established solutions such as;
- Itential
- Ansible
- Microfocus Operations Orchestrator
- Prior operational management experience providing operational support to large scale enterprises
- Experience/understanding leveraging industry available software to build proprietary solutions utilising elements of the following
- Docker/K8
- Prior experience automating workloads against the following technology stacks
- Cisco (eg Meraki/NX-OS…)
- Juniper (QFX)
- ThousandEyes
- Palo Alto
- F5
- Microsoft
- Red Hat
- VMWare

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.
This position is eligible for either short-term incentives or sales compensation. Director and VP positions also are eligible for long-term incentive.
