SUMMARY:
Assists supervisor with direction of personnel and operations of the Laboratory Section and assumes responsibility for these daily activities in the absence of the supervisor.
Problem solves and provides technical assistance to staff.
Performs specimen analyses to assist in diagnosing and monitoring the treatment of disease, interprets test results, and ensures accuracy.
Facilitates department policies, procedures, and work standards.
Assists with orientating, training, monitoring and evaluating employee performance.
Functions as an assistant resource person to the Pathology staff and other health professionals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs testing on patient specimens using medical instrumentation and approved, standardized methods to assist physicians in diagnosing diseases and monitoring treatment.
Assists in managing quality control program in Laboratory Section by checking precision and accuracy of testing on a daily, monthly, and quarterly basis. Helps ensure the section's compliance with established standards.
Ensures proper calibration, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment, arranges for repairs as necessary with supervisor'' approval.
Evaluates results of patient testing, quality control and survey testing and takes appropriate action to prevent compromise in patient care. Prepares written reports summarizing findings of the quality control, survey testing and equipment maintenance programs.
Trains Pathology Technicians, Medical Laboratory Scientists, and Medical Laboratory Science students in section procedures, policies, practices, equipment function, maintenance and any other aspects of section operations.
Authors, reviews, and revises laboratory policies and standard operating procedures.
Assists Pathology Technicians and Supervisor in coordinating referral specimen testing to include contacting other institutions, shipping specimens, obtaining reports of test results and ensuring that patients are billed for testing, shipping and handling procedures performed.
Assists in monitoring and reviewing the workflow of the area by prioritizing and assigning tasks to staff to ensure procedures are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
Advises and assists the Pathology staff and other health professionals and resolves problems as necessary.
Researches and tests new procedures and instrumentation for potential implementation. Make recommendations as appropriate under the direction of the Supervisor.
Assists the Supervisor in maintaining adequate inventory levels of supplies and equipment for the section.
Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section
Assumes charge responsibilities as assigned by Pathology Management.
Keeps up to date on new developments in the field by attending continuing education programs and reading current journals and periodicals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Laboratory Science or related field, which includes a one-year internship in an approved clinical laboratory required.
Minimum 2 years' experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist required.
Current and valid Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or equivalent certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathology(ASCP) or other equivalent certifying agency required.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
Position reports to the Director of the Lab.
Position is a day shift.
The hospital will offer a range between $26.50hr-$35.00hr depending on experience.
