Job description

SUMMARY:

This position will be responsible for planning, management and evaluation of fund development activities to support and sustain the mission of Nebraska Children and Families Foundation. Create and enhance department processes to operate efficiently and effectively towards fund development goals. Manage and direct the activities of fund development staff. And cultivate and maintain a portfolio of high-end donors that includes cultivating and stewarding individual, corporate and foundation investors, both prospective and current, to financially support the mission and statewide work of Nebraska Children. This position can be located in the Omaha/Lincoln area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

Fund Development Strategy / Comprehensive Planning for Sustainability:

  • Continual communication with Nebraska Children Leadership around vision and strategy for Nebraska Children to remain resilient and ensure sustainable funding
  • Create an annual fund development plan that guides the work of the department, including unrestricted and programmatic raise amounts
  • Meet with Nebraska Children leadership, CFO, and Director of Accounting regularly to review budget, donor/revenue projections and priorities
  • Identify and cultivate new prospective donors and partners, strategizing approaches with key Nebraska Children leadership.
  • Analyze past and current fund development activities with the expectation of growing annual support and develop goals for fund development team and other key staff to meet these goals
  • In partnership with the CFO Develop and manage the annual budget for Fund Development
  • Work with Nebraska Children Leadership and Marketing for messaging and materials to support donor needs
  • Develop close relationships with program staff to ensure program needs are being met by the development team
  • Serve on Nebraska Children's Steering Committee
  • Recruit, select, and supervise development staff to accomplish the objectives of Nebraska Children and Families Foundation.
Fundraising: (Major Gifts/Unrestricted Giving):
  • Develop and execute a strategy and prospect list that supports unrestricted/operation dollars and sustains NC initiatives, especially in the Omaha area
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with national funders
  • Develop and implement a plan to cultivate and engage prospective and current investors to support the work of Nebraska Children through a donation, grant, or major gift.
  • Lead Program staff in engaging programmatic donors, including engagement, asks, and donor management
  • Creatively use program, service, public awareness, and fund development activities as volunteer/PR/cultivation opportunities for potential major donors.
  • Steward all relationships through the giving process to be positioned for a long-lasting relationship with Nebraska Children
  • Manage process to create and send ask letters, grant applications, and reports
  • Track meeting notes, important findings, and process with prospective and current investors in the donor database.
  • Focus personal donor portfolio on Omaha-based donor prospects, and select donors outside of region based on fit and priorities
Development and implementation of Fund Development Processes
Research best practices and improve processes related to the following:
  • Donor prospecting and donor cultivation step tracking
  • Donor maintenance, reporting and long-term engagement
  • Donor recognition and correspondence strategies related to donor type and donor longevity
Work with Nebraska Children's fundraising team to:
  • Create strategies to target new audiences and have a donor cultivation and recognition plan customized for individual donors, foundations, grants, corporate, and legacy giving
  • Identify best target audience for each team member with prospecting plans and "ask" goals
  • Facilitate Continuous communication with team members around Nebraska children needs and priority areas
  • Oversee special events, guild activities, and speaking opportunities for fundraising and awareness building of Nebraska Children
Board Engagement/Management:
  • Plan and execute board and board committee meetings and a yearly board retreat.
  • Oversee administrative needs of the board of directors, along with the Development Associate
  • Maintain strong, engaging relationships with members of the Board of Directors, and work with NC leadership to involve board members in the fund development plan as ambassadors, askers, and/or advocates.
  • Lead the Fund Development Workgroup of the board of directors and participate on subcommittees related to fund development and sustainability as needed.
Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position supervises 3 development team staff consisting of:
    • NC's Grant writer - research and writing of large public and private grant opportunities
    • NC's development associate - focused on donor database, donor acknowledgement and recognition, research prospecting, grant management, and development and board administration. .
    • NC's Special events and sponsorships - executes fundraising and awareness events, guild management, corporate sponsorship, and small family foundations opportunities.
WORK DIRECTION RECEIVED: Works with minimal direction.
SCOPE/NATURE OF DISCRETION: Delegated discretion; authority to initiate and carry out actions that are deemed essential.
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:
  • HS diploma or GED and at least 5 years of experience in major gifts solicitation, donor prospect cultivation, and strategic partnership development
  • Track record of taking on challenging opportunities and turning them into successes
  • Portfolio of successful solicitations of private gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Successful experience communicating the needs and purpose of a complex organization in system-level human service work
Knowledge:
  • Experience with and understanding of the Omaha funder landscape
  • Experience with grant and report writing
  • Experience in project management, budget oversight, contract monitoring, or similar.
  • Experience with data entry, database system management, and analysis.

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as grant solicitations or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write grant proposals and progress reports as well as routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries about the organization from the public and/or business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to public groups.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute, rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to read and interpret demographic and statistical research data.
REASONING ABILITY:
