Job description
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Patient Accounts, the Financial Screener is responsible for all registration and financially related data collection when a patient arrives at the practice site without insurance or underinsured. Bilingual Spanish is Preferred
Responsibilities:
1. Financially screen uninsured patients.
2. Verify patient's insurance via on-line or by phone.
3. Obtain documentation needed to complete an "Uninsured Care Application".
4. Income screening on pregnant women to determine PE (Presumptive Eligibility); complete PE application on-line.
5. Do an on-line PE (Presumptive Eligibility) application for qualified children.
6. Schedule an appointment with an out-stationed Medicaid worker for patients who are eligible for Medicaid.
7. Issue a "Sliding Fee" rating card to patients that have completed an "Uninsured Care Application" that do not qualify for Medicaid benefits based on their family size and income and /or not a US citizen, or brought in a letter of denial from Medicaid.
8. Manage "Medicaid Pending" accounts and bill once Medicaid number has been sent via mail or by checking the NJMMIS on-line database.
9. Call Medicaid office to report the birth of a child if the parents have not done so.
10. File/purge applications.
11. Review and Follow-up with applications that are not complete.
12. Answer phone calls.
13. Contact Medicaid offices to verified status of an application.
14. Contact PE office to obtain an emergency temporary Medicaid number on a PE filed applicants that require an emergency medication.
15. Keep staff inform on any updates with Medicaid/NJFamilycare.
16. Train all new staff members.
17. Evaluate all Financial Screening applications.
18. Performs all duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent is a requirement.
- 1 to 3 years experience in an applicable healthcare setting is preferred.
- Computer literate with the ability to learn customer service, and EMR applications.
- Duties require professional verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to type 30 wpm.
- Understands and applies computer knowledge, skills, procedures and information needed on the job.
- Ability to convey information effectively.
- Self directed.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Performs all other duties when assigned.
- Become informed on insurance health advocacy topics(s) related to proposed legislation.
- Present oneself in a professional manner, including dress, attitude, written and verbal communications skills, courtesy and pleasant environment to all staff and patients.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
