Description
This position is an integral part of our Narrow Web Technical team, which interfaces closely with Narrow Web Product Management and Field Marketing Managers. Our Narrow Web portfolio consists primarily of waterbased and UV-curable flexo ink and coating systems for labels, shrink sleeves, and flexible packaging. The Chemist III is primarily responsible for completion of laboratory projects for Narrow Web business, ranging widely in scale from quick-turnaround business support requests to long-term product development work. A practical and analytical approach with excellent communication, responsiveness, and organizational skills are essential to success in this position.
Essential Job Functions:
- Hands-on laboratory work, primarily with waterbased and UV-curable flexographic inks and coatings:
- Includes everything from raw material and product evaluations, to simple formula modifications, to new product formulation.
- Project priorities are set by Narrow Web Product and Technical Management according to customer demands and opportunities for product portfolio improvement.
- Maintenance of laboratory notebook and GPM (Global Project Management) software entries.
- Support of Sun Chemical safety, quality, and continuous improvement culture, including ISO protocol.
- Possible occasional travel for meetings and first-time customer trials.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- College degree or equivalent in a science or engineering discipline is preferred.
- 5+ years of experience with water-based inks
- 7+ years of familiarity with materials and concepts relative to UV-curable and especially waterbased formulations is a plus
- Preparation of customer presentation proofs, lab reports, and wet standards.
- Field experience is a plus
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Equipment needed for laboratory work includes:
- flexo handproofers, UV curing unit, viscometers and rheometers, and mixers.
- Specialized testing equipment includes Instron bond tester, Sutherland rub tester, COF tester, heat sealer, and spectrophotometer
Key Relationships:
- Narrow Web Technical Manager/Director
- Product Manager, and other Narrow Web group members
- Occasional correspondence with Manufacturing, other Sun Chemical laboratories
- Sales and CTS (Customer Technical Service)
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Full Time, Exempt
Travel Requirements: 10-20% or as needed.
