Job description

The John Theurer Cancer Center (JTCC), an NCI-designated Cancer Center and New Jersey's largest cancer program, is seeking a full time Molecular NGS Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Qualified candidates will be responsible for overseeing the general function of the wet lab operation performing functions like QA, QM, QC, and trains clinical laboratory scientists. The successful candidate will be mission-driven and excited about Genomic Lab vision and mission.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Independently perform clinical testing in accordance with established standard operating procedures.
  • Adheres to Clinical Laboratory regulations including CAP, CLIA and DOH regulations and other regulatory bodies.
  • Adheres to industry and government standards regarding safe handling of biohazardous and other hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrate high-level problem solving skills and analytical abilities to successfully perform laboratory testing.
  • Performs a variety of laboratory techniques and utilizes analytic instrumentation, such as next genetic sequencing (NGS), RT-PCR, extraction and fragment analysis.
  • Participates in evaluation of new laboratory processes and validation of these procedures.
  • Extensive and complex steps requiring manual manipulation and pipetting.
  • Evaluates patient samples received and organize work flow to provide optimum efficiency of testing and turn around times of results.
  • Accessioning patient into the lab information system.
  • Evaluation of data.
  • Identifying issues and troubleshooting.
  • Performs Quality Control, Quality Assurance and Quality Management.
  • Trains subordinate clinical laboratory scientists and laboratory associates when completion of training and competency is documented.
  • Maintaining of analytical instrumentation.
  • Maintain equipment by performing assigned maintenance activities and troubleshoot.
  • Record data to monitor temperatures.
  • Evaluate inventory of consumables and reagents.
  • Maintain clean work environment.
  • Assist in writing and maintaining SOPs.
  • Extract, denature and purify DNA from assorted specimen types.
  • Detailed organization in extraction and library preparation.
  • Perform PCR, hybridization, and next generation sequencing.
  • Loading and running libraries on illumina sequencing instrumentation.


Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Chemical, Physical, Biological Science or other related field.
  • MT (ASCP) or MB (ASCP) certification required.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years related experience with minimum of 1 year supervisory experience.
  • Experience with NextSeq Illumina instrument is preferred.
  • Hands on experience with PCR techniques with DNA/RNA isolation methods.
  • Ability to work independently and as part as a team.
  • Must be detail oriented and possess strong organizational skills.
