The Science Labs Coordinator is an administrative position with lab-based instructional responsibilities. This individual manages the operations for all of the institution's Natural Science Labs, which includes managing the area's budget, supervising and scheduling all staff (including student and temporary employees), and maintaining inventories of microscopes, equipment, specimens, supplies, all consumables, chemicals (CIL), Safety Data Sheets (SDS), purchases, bacterial/cultures and surplus. The Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the laboratory areas in conjunction with the Facilities staff, maintaining plant and animal cultures; preparing requisitions and ordering materials for laboratory exercises. The Science Labs Coordinator sets up materials for laboratory exercises, assists with student activities in the Science Labs and helps to provide thoughtful management and an effective learning experience for students enrolled in Science courses. The Science Labs Coordinator will act as the Natural Sciences Labs (and SCCC Research Institute) Safety Officer. This job requires computer proficiency, high organization and excellent interpersonal skills. Considered critical components to overall safety, this individual will be charged with organizing and maintaining the equipment, machines, instruments, rooms, and supplies. This person will coordinate the purchase of equipment and replacement of consumable supplies; maintain and analyze records and data in a computerized database pertaining to the equipment and supplies; offer instruction and training to faculty and students on the safe use of the equipment; develop written manuals, protocols, and forms related to the needs in the Department. This person will adhere to the primacy principle of the position (while including caring regard): facilitate the enterprise of doing science in the building.

General Responsibilities

1.

Intentionally focuses on leading-and-developing a culture of "caring regard" at the college.

Assures that faculty and students are provided with appropriate materials to facilitate learning by ordering, preparing, and setting up materials needed for laboratory exercises in all Science subject areas. Follows the laboratory procedures and instructions by course instructor to effectively assist in conducting and explaining experiments in biological science laboratories. Assists faculty with the design of lab set ups and protocols. Organizes and maintains biological media prep and bacterial cultures for students each semester. Utilizes autoclaves/sterilizers.

Helps to provide a coordinated learning experience for students by assisting with the coordination of lab course sections and lecture instructors.

Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Maintains competency and professional currency through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contact with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as recommended and/or required by the Dean of the Professional Studies, Social Sciences and STEM Department.

Understands that the Coordinator is subject to various hazards including, but not limited to, a variety of physical conditions that may cause harm, exposure to high heat and chemicals. An employee in this position has a high risk for occupational exposure to human blood, blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials as a result of the performance of the employee's duties.

Supervises the laboratory sections of assigned classes in coordination with the lecture portion instructor of the course.

Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.

9.

Managerial duties include planning and coordinating the preparation of materials for day and evening laboratories, ordering and maintaining an inventory of equipment and supplies, performing minor repairs and maintenance, arranging for major repairs and equipment maintenance, creating digital media for remote instructions, assembling lab kits, and providing learning support for online instruction.

10.

Serves in the role as interviewer for biology lab assistants, lab aides, tutors and student lab aides and tutors and makes recommendations for hire to the Dean while working within a budget. This includes, but is not limited to, interviews and coordinating with Human Resources Department and Financial Aid Office as needed. Schedules and supervises all part-time lab Coordinators, lab assistants, lab aides, and tutors

Serves as liaison between faculty, staff and students and in that role provides a positive educational environment through effective human relations skills.

Assists in conducting experiments in biological science laboratories.

13.

Reviews the lab exercises, software, any technology, lab exams, study materials in concert with full time faculty.

14.

Assists the Chair and Dean with the preparation of the annual budget.

15.

Handles instructional responsibility at the discretion of the administration.

16.

Manages requisitions and purchase orders for the Science Labs portion of the STEM Department.

17.

Organizes annual equipment maintenance and service contracts to ensure they are appropriately reviewed to ensure coverage.

18.

Manages maintenance of all Science Labs Operational Procedure Manuals (PM) and Standard Operating Protocol (SOP) Manual with input from full-time faculty.

19.

Coordinates, organizes and leads weekly staff meeting with the lab attendants

20.

Attends designated division and department meetings at the invitation of the Department Chair; or when the Dean feels there are sufficient lab-based issues or needs that would benefit from departmental input.

21.

Gently encourages faculty to engage in the set-up of labs in their own classes in order to influence the "culture of science" in the natural sciences building.

Ability to work some evenings and some Saturday hours, as may be assigned, including recruitment-related activities such as Open House and Orientation events

The Science Lab Coordinator will act as the Science Labs Safety Officer, and in that role will provide leadership with respect to safety procedures and OSHA standards in all labs and prep rooms. Continuing education in lab safety and lab techniques is an important part of this job. Participate in the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Committee meetings as department representative and update College policy when necessary. Participate in Center for Professional Development, health and safety, and departmental training, and any other professional development as assigned. Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Trustees Policies and College Policies & Procedures. Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others. Complete health and safety training pursuant to federal, state and SCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices. Participate in all applicable SCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to act and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.

Ability to drive to state-level and other meetings representing the College

EDUCATION -

* Master's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field. Hazardous waste management training preferred.
* Course work and professional experience in inorganic and analytical chemistry is strongly preferred.

Essential Skills and Dispositions:

* Three to five years of experience working in a laboratory environment with some managerial responsibilities
* Teaching experience at the college level.
* Effective oral and written communication skills are required
* Knowledge of CANVAS or a similar learning management system is preferred
* Knowledge of Excel and computer programs that would assist in the performance of the position
* A passion for working with students
* Passion to conduct some research at the college
