The project engineer is responsible for leading or supporting the execution of projects to implement design or process changes to improve key business metrics such as quality, cost, or supply continuity. This is a multifaceted technical role at the intersection of science / engineering and business. Versatility, creativity, initiative, critical thinking, and leadership abilities are essential to this role. Projects will vary; you may work with reagents or consumables used in our diagnostic system by qualifying new or alternate materials; or develop, validate and implement new manufacturing processes as the leader of a cross functional team.
This role affords the opportunity to achieve and be credited for quantifiable financial results and improvement of other key business metrics through execution and leadership of technical projects. There will be opportunity for growth into the leadership of more complex and demanding projects over time as the project engineer progresses in her/his skills and experience. The role will be permanently hybrid (remote / onsite) and comes with a high level of flexibility in work location, with a strong bias toward allowing the individual to work remotely if preferred at times when onsite presence is not required to perform job responsibilities.
Primary Responsibilities of the job include:
- Evaluate reagents and consumables and their manufacturing processes in the context of functional applications in Cepheid assays, to investigate project opportunities.
- Assess feasibility from the standpoint of technical, operational and financial considerations, in collaboration with subject matter experts
- Lead cross functional teams for the execution of simple projects, or support the management of larger, more complex programs led by Sr./Staff Project Engineers
- Work with finance to assess project value and ROI
- Be a champion for change by advocating for design or process improvements
- Use data analytics to make recommendations on actions
- Create project plans and timelines in collaboration with cross-functional team
- Coordinate risk assessments, e.g. FMEA analyses
- Deliver project status presentations
- Coordinate qualification and validation activities
- This position may require some travel under normal circumstances (not applicable during COVID travel restrictions)
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline such as chemical or biomedical engineering with 2+ years of related work experience OR
- Master's degree with 0-2 years of related work experience.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience working in an FDA-regulated environment
- Graduate level degree
- Familiarity with PCR assays
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to think critically in finding and executing solutions to problems
- Experience participating in technical projects with cross-functional teams
- High level of organization and attentiveness to detail
- High degree of professional acumen; can work well with other internal functional groups
- Practical understanding of statistical techniques for data analysis and process control
- Demonstrated technical and analytical ability.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and controls related to area of expertise
