Reporting to the HR Director, the HR Benefits & Leave Manager is responsible for the administration and oversight for benefits programs, including group health plans, life insurance, tuition benefits, and leaves. In this role, you will proactively work with brokers and vendors to identify potential cost savings and value-added improvements to ensure healthcare management and enhancement initiatives are aligned with the strategic direction of the organization. What you do (Duties & Responsibilities):

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with brokers and third-party providers and ensure maximum utilization of resources and services. Coordinate and ensure the resolution of complex benefit plan issues.
  • Assists with developing, interpreting, modifying, and communicating various benefit policies and procedures.
  • Participate in setting the benefits strategy; includes participating in monthly meetings with the benefits broker.
  • Oversee premium payments to third party providers.
  • Serve as a resource to HR staff in matters concerning benefit programs. Respond to benefits issues and troubleshoot problems. Identify recurring issues and make recommendations for solutions. Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to issues.
  • Review and analyze processes, identify ways to streamline, automate, and incorporate changes into daily operations. Work with HR staff to develop and implement improved processes.
  • Open enrollment: Manages updates to employee handbook, benefits booklet, benefits summary sheets, yearly notices, etc.
  • Assists with employee benefits communication and education activities: develop high-quality employee benefits communication materials; may create and deliver effective presentations, conduct employee meetings, and sponsor guest speakers on various topics of interest to employees.
  • Oversee maintenance of benefits website.
  • Manage all leaves of absence, including but not limited to: Worker's Compensation, Short-term Disability, Long-term Disability, FMLA, NYS PSL, and FFCRA. Coordinates with Payroll for collection of premiums due in arrears.
  • Prepare a variety of government reports, such as EEO reports, US Census Bureau Reports, etc.
  • May process verification of employment, funeral donations, service recognition checks, retirement gifts and checks, stationery and business cards.
  • Be an expert in your trade - Keep up to date with federal and local laws, and best practices in the industry and apply them appropriately to your day-to-day work (i.e. FMLA, PFL, ADA, etc.).


Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • A/E industry experience preferred.

  • Advanced computer skills, including data entry, data processing, communication tools and payroll and human resources software. ADP Workforce Now experience preferred.
