Job description
UES, Inc. has an opportunity available for a Research Scientist, focused in Biosignatures, to join our team working at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. This position will support development of ocular complex 3D models as a representative of ocular surface and tear secretory systems. Research functions will include : Design, construct, in vitro 3D corneal, lacrimal or conjunctiva equivalents, or organoids models that are innovative and advanced, promising to expand mechanistic studies to identify biosignatures of stress in tears. Design, construct, in vitro three-dimensional (3D) coculture model for the ocular surface of tear secretion. It is composed of mammalian conjunctival epithelium and lacrimal gland cells that recapitulates the aqueous and mucin layers of the tear film. Design and optimize a culture system for both cell types to optimize their secretory functions applying techniques involve goblet cell enrichment, air-lifting culture, and 3D spheroid formation techniques etc. The co-culture model of the two cell components produce tear secretion and expression of biosignatures as secretory stress markers. Expose this model to various operationally relevant stress in laboratory conditions (Extreme temperatures, hypoxia, particles, and chemicals) and measure relevant biosignatures. Essential functions for this role will include:
- Design of in vitro 3D corneal, lacrimal or conjunctiva equivalents or organoids models including primary cell isolation from tissues and cells culturing
- Perform imaging techniques (confocal, optical and electron microscopy), molecular tools (PCR, ELISA etc.) and physiology tools (ocular health, mechanism of secretion) to evaluate 3D models in various operationally relevant stress conditions
- Utilize CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tools, miRNA isolation, gene expression, protein analysis, exosomes/microvesicle characterization to validate models
- Data analysis, results interpretation, statistical analysis, and scientific communication
- Project development, troubleshooting, presenting
Requirements:
- Ph.D. in related field (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology) is required
- 1-5 years of relevant research experience.
- Proficiency in ophthalmology, imaging techniques and molecular skills are required.
- A successful candidate should demonstrate well-developed planning and organizational skills with ability to prioritize multiple tasks and set/meet deadlines
- A successful candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct reports.
- Additionally, this role will provide laboratory and technical support to other staff
