Job description

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Risk Management, the Environmental Safety and Health Specialist:

· Maintains environmental health and safety programs to be in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations and standards.

· Responds to, evaluates and provides remediation of complaints, inquiries and emergencies on campus.

· Performs tasks essential to the daily operations of campus EHS programs.

· This position will lead the institutions environmental compliance and lab safety initiatives, including radiation, laser, and hazardous waste programs, as well as assist or take the lead in many other campus safety programs.

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

Compliance Activities

· Maintains environmental health and safety programs to be in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations and standards.

· Advises the University community on environmental, health and safety (EHS) protocols to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations and standards

· Assists with development of written policies. Stays abreast of changes to safety codes and regulations; Researches best practices of EHS issues impacting the University.

· Conducts safety inspections of university facilities (including hazardous waste facility) equipment and processes as required; Prepares reports outlining results of inspections and where necessary invokes measures necessary to correct hazards

· Prepares and submits all reports, permits, waste manifests and program data as required

· Provides direct training to faculty staff and students on a variety of EHS topics

· Provides oversight of vendors and contractors engaged in EHS regulated activities

Remediation

· Responds to requests for information or technical assistance and visits locations when necessary; assists with problem resolution and answers questions encountered which involves interpretation, clarification, and/or review of standards, roles, policies, programs, etc.

· Follows prescribed protocols for the remediation of hazardous and infectious waste to and from haz. waste storage facility and radioactive material storage area, confirming waste identification, compatibility, proper storage and labeling in accordance with regulations.

· Responds to accidental hazardous materials releases or suspected releases and odors and, as needed, serves as the project manager for those releases managed solely by EHS. Occasional after-hour response required.

· Assists with emergency preparedness efforts, including review of plans and emergency tabletop exercises

· Interacts with internal and external customers in correspondence, telephone communications and inspections

· Leads and supports efforts that ensure facilities, equipment, processes and employee behaviors promote injury reduction and protection of the learning and work environment

· Conducts accident investigations, evaluates accident data and recommends proactive solutions to reduce risk

· Offers guidance on safety and health standards impacting construction, renovation and demolition projects; Attends project meetings as needed

Support Functions

· Performs tasks essential to the daily operations of campus EHS programs including monitoring and recording functionality and location of fire and life safety equipment

· Disseminates information about departmental operations to promote general knowledge of program requirements to employees

· Assists with university facility and equipment safety program management

· Assists with industrial hygiene and occupational safety & health program management

· Supports other departmental programs as assigned

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

· Knowledge of laboratory and field operations preferably as an environmental technician or coordinator in a higher-education setting.

· Must be able to demonstrate prior experience in managing complex EHS programs with accountability for measured outcomes.

· Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to gather and interpret data, organize and conduct investigations, apply regulations and write reports.

· Ability to establish positive work relationships and to develop and implement solutions to address a wide variety of challenges.

· Ability to carry, manage and properly wear required safety equipment.

· Proficient in use of Microsoft Office® Programs.

· Formalized regulations which guide the actions of this position include but are not limited to those of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Public Employer Risk Reduction Program (PERRP). Must be able to read, interpret, and implement regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Safety & Health, Environmental Management, Environmental Studies, Public Health or related field. Degree must be conferred at the time of application. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and comply with the university's vehicle use policy.

The following experience is required:

· 1-year experience maintaining health and safety compliance programs; and/or

· 1-year experience responding and providing mediation of complaints and emergencies

Salary Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 356. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
